Day 63 Shetland, Lerwick
To the South, Archeological dig, Old Scatness Broch Day 62: Friday 7th July 2006: Misty still: It was very noisy in the hostel with a lot of people coming in late. We took a taxi ride to the big Smyril line ferry where on board people were smoking +++ to the Shetland Islands arriving at 9pm. We were in a 12 bed dorm - still OK. kitchen and dining room pretty good. Nice to be in an English speaking country where I can read the signs.
Day 63: Sunny and warm: We went into town and caught a bus to the South to the Old Scotness archeological dig. The site was closed but we were allowed to watch a video, then we were permitted to go out to the dig and climb upto a lookout area to overlook the dig. Beautiful sunshine and one cloud that opened up above us - but we had our trusty plastic raincoats and Japanese brollies. After this we strolled a mile or so down the road to Jarlshof, another site dated back to the Bronze age. We were able to actually walk in and around the buildings - hard if not impossible to imagine what the people were like who had

here a couple of thousand years ago.
One thing about a lot of the places we visit on our travels, we are sometimes the only people here.
Back home for a fish a chips tea before going to a concert for Nelson Mandela's 88th. birthday. The people of Lerwick do fundraising for African aid with money from the concert going to this cause. The concert players were local stock - singers, 2 girl fiddlers who were absolutely brilliant and a combnation of African drums and bagpipes. The £5 concert went for 3½ hours and was very enjoyable.
Day 64: Week 10: Sunday 9th. July: Raining ++: We had booked to go on a walking tour around town so we rugged up warm and off we went on a very good interesting walk around, stopping at the Lodberry which is a natural landing -it poured with rain and we got drenched. Home to do the washing - 6 hours for 2 loads. After tea we went for a walk around the point, by the golf course, by the cemetery, and got lost. Back to the harbour where we were in the morning and because the rain stopped we

again so we could take photos. Home eventually. It is still light nearly all the time.
Day 65: monday 10th July: Clear and sunny until it rained: We caught a bus to Scalloway when the weather changed to windy and pouring rain then the sun came out again so we walked up to and into Scalloway Castle ruins. a quick trip only as after lunch we walked to the ferry for the ride to the Orkneys arriving in Kirkwall late at night - 11.30 pm we were walking up the street and into darkness to the hostel with everything quiet except for the music of our cases on the pavement. Again loud enough to wake the dead. The driveway into the hostel was loose bluemetal and it built up under the cases wheels making hard work even more difficult. The hostel room and shower was disgusting!!!!.
