Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Every golfer who has been somewhat serious about golf must make a pilgrimmage to the home of golf, St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland. The earliest recordings of golf date back to 1456, several years before Columbus got to the New World. The opportunity arose in 1999, due to a business trip to London to see a famous physician. Our friends, Mike and Susie joined us, though the ladies do not play golf. They were good sports in letting us have this golf outing of a lifetime. Several days in London, though fun and busy, went by slowly in anticipation of the trip [View Full Entry]

Day three---London to St. Andrews Got up early, showered, packed up and grabbed breakfast at the hotel. They serve grilled tomatoes with breakfast. Weird. Started the drive from London to St. Andrews at approximately 8 a.m. The country-side was.....magnificent. Stopped off at an OK Diner for lunch...this was funny...it was a diner in the UK trying to look American. Saw more gorgeous country-side..... Though I didn't get any pictures, we also happened to drive right by Sherwood forest (yeah, that Sherwood forest) and Nottinghamshire. So cool! Finally, on the other si [View Full Entry]

Day seven---St. Andrews Slept in for the first time since the vacation began. Our friends room is so awesome, they have this HUGE baywindow that overlooks the rooftops of St. Andrews.... Check out the view from their room: http://sugarmountain.vox.com/library/post/vacation--day-seven.html Seriously...that's the view....it's FABULOUS! And the sky is really that blue! Took a nice leisurely shower, got dressed and headed out with Husband and friends in search of cappucinnos and snacks. Had cappucino and bagel at this really neat coffee shop called BeanScene and then walked a [View Full Entry]

Day nine--St. Andrews After all the running around we did in Edinburgh and Stirling, it was definitely time for relaxation. Husband and I got up and walked to BeanScene for breakfast. (Loved their cinnamin-rasin bagels) Had a nice chat about the vacation thus far, looked through some tourist pamplets and then parted ways. (Husband was going to have a "boys day" with our friends and I was going to explore St. Andrews...and yes...when I say explore...I mean shop) I know I've mentioned this before...but St. Andrews is beautiful... Day ten--St. Andrews, Kingsbarns Woke up early. Walked a mile to get our first view at the 13 mile trail we'd be conquering that day...the Fife Coastal path. Check out photos of the Fife Coastal Path: http://sugarmountain.vox.com/library/post/vacation--day-ten.html The hike started above the beach and would take us right next to one of St. Andrews many golf courses. It was a beautiful day for a hike...the ocean looked amazing....everything was blooming....it was a hikers dream! The wide-open-space was incredibly comforting.....the land seemed so....fresh.... The Sea
The Sea
"Down by the sea...wouldn't it be smashing..."
So Kaitlyn and I have returned from the beautiful and ancient city of St. Andrew's. As daughters of the eastern shore line of America, it was like a homecoming to be able to sit by the sea. There is nothing like the feeling the wind in our face and smelling the scent of salt on the air. The golf courses are nice and all (though I'm sure golf enthusiasts would kill us for our lack of exuberance), but give us the sand shore and craggy rocks any day. We had wonderful luck when it came to weather, the light rain showers [View Full Entry]

The Town
Thank you Glaciers!

We have just arrived in St. Andrews and finally found time to set up our blog. So far....we have been many places (but that is for another blog). We pulled into St. Andrews the morning of September 20 and could not believe how pretty it was. The actual University is spread throughout the town, it is hard to distinguish University buildings from all the other buildings in town. Our dorm is called Wardlaw and it is a part of University Hall. Wardlaw is the only all girls dorm...standard. At first we were put into a beautiful room overlooking the ocean in [View Full Entry]

Well, our 3 months lazing period has come to an end again as Alan has got another contract down in Knutsford. He has left today to start work there again tomorrow and Beth and I will be following on shortly to stay down there full time, returning to Uddingston every second or third weekend to make sure our house is still standing. The plan actually was that we would both find work in Glasgow or poss Edinburgh but unfortunately Financial Services hasn't got much to offer by way of decent contracts in Scotland at the moment so we're just embracing the [View Full Entry]

Keenen Family Blog: I have arrived in Scotland for a week of business planning. We just took an unofficial tour of the old course. Drove across the 18th fairway, stopped and saw the old clubhouse and then proceeded to drive through town. Just had a cheeseburger and a pop in the pub of the hotel. The Fairmont is nice, as expected, but I would guess the history and course is the real draw. Isn’t it ironic that I am the least interested in golf of all my friends yet one of the first to St. Andrews. The world works in strange [View Full Entry]

Thursday, October 4, 2007 I loved St. Andrews so much when my parents and I were there a couple of weeks ago that I decided to come back for the day. It’s a beautiful town, and I think it’s my favorite in Scotland. There was a golf tournament going on, and dad told me that it was a pro-am, meaning there were professionals and ameteurs(celebrities) so I thought it would be cool. Well, watching golf in person is just as boring as watching it on tv...plus I didn’t get to see any big stars, no Bill Murray, or George Lopez, or [View Full Entry]
