We awoke as we were making our way through the Firth of Clyde to our port in Greenock. We had a leisurely brekkie and prepared to go ashore. There was a marquee set up on the dock of the cruise terminal, for both customs and security, and also for tourist and clan information. We were looking at a clan map on a board when a little man came over to assist us. Well, didn’t he have his work cut out for him? Of course he had a wealth of information on James Watt, and his grandparents who had been the ones to leave the Watt clan land and come down to Greenock. He also had a wealth of information on Tom‘s Cummings, Murrays and Bapties and my new Davidson and Rhind families. The Davidson tartan is ... read more

Our morning arrival in Greenock finds us a stone’s throw from Glasgow. Normal dining operations on the Rotterdam have returned and it appears that we won’t be returning to Boston under the “Code Red” conditions that resulted soon after our embarkation from there. We grabbed our normal “Tour Day” fare from the Lido, and it went quicker now that we were back to serving ourselves. It was nice to have salt and pepper back on the tables, and not needing to walk halfway across the Lido to track down a set of tableware. We have another All-Day tour that will likely not get us back in time for Trivia. The Showroom was packed with others waiting for tours to be announced. We were in the third wave off the Rotterdam filling busses 6 and 7 headed ... read more

We started our second day at Skye retracing some of the previous days sites we had passed and then on to another loop road, visiting the Fairy Glen, a series of enchanting and strange grass covered rock formations and ruins giving it the appearance of well...a fairy glen or Hobbiton. We visited some old MacDonald castle ruins along the ocean, which is haunted by a noble who was tortured to death by being deprived water and fed only salted beef, and a nanny who was executed after she dropped a baby off one of the high walls. The only company we had was of a herd of sheep here, unfortunately no ghosts. We went to Neist Point lighthouse, quite literally the most beautiful setting for a lighthouse I have ever seen and straight from a postcard. ... read more

Darkness is setting in in Toronto as we board the A330 for Glasgow. It’s hard to believe 400 people have paid good money for the opportunity to cram themselves into a 9 seat wide aluminum tube with wings for a 6 12 hour flight. The view of Toronto’s lights as the engines thrust us skyward into the night was breathtaking. We could just make out the moonlight glinting off Lake Ontario as we drifted overhead. The plane made a constant noise like a car window cracked open a bit at 120km/hr as it thrust itself through the air at about 400mph trying to make up time for the delay in Toronto. Sleep was almost impossible, trying to lean on each other or use our coats as pillows. About 1/2 way my legs started going crazly so ... read more

Ik had ... read more

My first blog- eeek! Have been looking forward to a big trip (Thailand- Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand) with my friend for the last four years, while I was at Uni. It got to the week we were going to book it and he has dropped out! Could honestly kick him right around the block just now! :-S So got the choice, do I go solo or miss out on the whole thing? Bit nervous about going myself because I've got an idea that being female and travelling alone is like asking fortrouble but I really don't think I can just not go after looking forward to it for that long! Looking for a travel buddy now, at least for Thailand to get me started and am checking out a lot of websites for ... read more
