Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

We set off north along the shores of Loch Lomond towards our next base at Inveraray - a whitewashed village in the shadows of Inverary Castle. We checked into the YHA, amongst the walking fraternity. As activity is somewhat weather dependent, we left some flexibility as to whether we headed straight to Oban through the Glens or went hunting stones near Kilmartin. We’d advise anybody to do their homework on the latter, as it is quite easy to drive straight past one of the most important sites in ancient Scotland. A rocky hill to the west of the main road was [View Full Entry]

Well, sadly we did not find Nessie! We sure looked though! Instead, we headed for the Isle of Skye, where we stopped to see a few castles, beautiful scenery, and a ridiculous number of sheep! The drivers spent most of their time avoiding taking one out, as well as evading bikers, busers, etc. while on a single-track road! Next, we toured the Talisker Distillery (yuck, whiskey is icky!) and it was pretty interesting. Then, we traveled by car ferry back to the mainland. We drove to Oban with a quick stop in Glencoe, where we walked around to look at the [View Full Entry]

Our plan was to overnight in Oban, take the car ferry to the Isle of Mull, and in two 1/2 days drive south and take short boat trips to Iona and Staffa, and then drive north to Tobermory and see everything else on Mull. Ambitious yes! Driving a manual shift, on the motorway, while seated in the passenger side of the car, heading in the opposite direction from 'usual' was going to be a challenge, but Michael had a full stomach and was wearing his motion bands so we headed out of Edinburgh after Dave's class on Wednesday (8th) - approximately [View Full Entry]

Arrived in Oban for some lunch, a look around and a bit of shopping. As we were walking along the harbour side I came across a boat called the Kylebhan. I sailed on this boat in 1989 back from St Kilda. Where at the time there was a small army outpost listening to submarine traffic and a communications outpost for the the North Atlantic. Getting out to the island was on an army landing craft with a flat bottom that basically drives up onto the beach to offload. Bought a 9ft sea rod today to do some spinning on Loch Leven, [View Full Entry]

Day 47 - Monday Left Edinburgh on Monday and got a tour called Macbackpackers. I will say this. What really makes or breaks a good tour is the people you are with and the driver. Both of which on this tour are a little lacking. The driver is a fill in driver (albeit a local which is nice), and the bus we are on is an over flow bus. Which means there are only 11 of us because the other bus is full. Don’t get me wrong, the people on the bus are nice. But with only 11 it’s hard to [View Full Entry]

Yummmm.....

I saw a couple of these yesterday while we were driving, but they were always on the wrong side of the vehicle for me to take a picture. They're pretty wild looking, with long horns and shaggy coats! Today I finished my explorations of my ancestral home, and made the five hour drive to the west coast this afternoon. I t was a beautiful drive, through forested area, alongside two large lakes, show-capped mountains in the background a fair bit of the way, with warm sunshine and clear skies all day, and very little wind. The west coast is apparently a [View Full Entry]

Last weekend the male contingent of the Eyre family were very keen to test out the waves in Scotland. Hence a 2 and a half hour drive from Oban to Campbeltown , straight to “Breaks” surf shop to hire necessary wetsuits and boards before heading to Macrahanish. The golf course is located directly behind the sand dunes and you have to drive across the golf course (beware the golf balls) and along the beach (in a 2wd) to the surf. Macrahanish provided a nice 3 foot swell and a water tem [View Full Entry]

Via Loch Lomond toward Oban We woke up to absolutely pouring rain! We decided to just grab a quick continental breakfast at the HIE, I had Frosties and yogurt. I had gotten some advice on our plans for today from the desk clerk; he used to be a coach driver and was really nice and helpful. He said the drive to Oban should take about 3 hours. The plan was to drive along Loch Lomond stopping to enjoy the beauty of the Loch, but it was raining way too hard for that. We also were going to stop at Lochawe and [View Full Entry]

Saturday 30 August - Oban to Barra (Geoff) Today is a quiet day lolling around town in Oban before we get on the ferry for Barra. Once again we went to the shops and I am now really worried as I came away with a couple of purchases and Sue ended up empty handed. This is almost unheard of and I can only assume that I am in for big trouble once we reach Rome and Paris. I might even have to go back to work to pay off the Visa card, depending how hard she hits it!!! At lunch time [View Full Entry]

“O ye'll tak' the high road and I'll tak' the low road, An' I'll be in Scotland afore ye' But me and my true love will never meet again On the bonnie, bonnie banks O' Loch Lomond." - Old Scottish Folk Tune Up far too early. Can't imagine why I can't sleep. So, I turn on the BBC who are promising a beautiful day, fire up the old laptop and wait for the coffee arrive. It does; I kill more time; I eventually get to the point where the tourist things will be open. I wander down the lobby only to [View Full Entry]
