Our plan was to overnight in Oban, take the car ferry to the Isle of Mull, and in two 1/2 days drive south and take short boat trips to Iona and Staffa, and then drive north to Tobermory and see everything else on Mull. Ambitious yes! Driving a manual shift, on the motorway, while seated in the passenger side of the car, heading in the opposite direction from 'usual' was going to be a challenge, but Michael had a full stomach and was wearing his motion bands so we headed out of Edinburgh after Dave's class on Wednesday (8th) - approximately a 3 hour drive. Thirty-five minutes into our drive and having left the highway, Michael and I required sustenance and fortification, so we stopped in the little village of Doune for some light refreshment. After a sandwich and a spud, we continued our way via Callandar, The Trossachs National Park, and the Lochawe area which was awesome! (Get it?!) A very, very pretty and lush, wind-ie country drive right up until we arrived in the picturesque sea-side village of Oban around 8pm. Oban means 'Little Bay' in Gaelic and is located on Scotland's western coast in Argyll or 'Earraghaidheal' as
Dounestopped in this village because driving in Scotland makes Michael and me hungry
I'm sure I dont have to remind you. Here are some of our favorite Oban sights...
McCaig's TowerA banker constructed this family memorial by giving unemployed masons work during the winters from 1895-1902
Oban Fishing fleet15 local boats catch langostines, scallops, crabs and lobsters. About 75% of their catch goes to France, Spain and Italy.
