Hi Friends and Family! Yes, the Isle of Skye! Of all the variety of Highland landforms, the mountain profiles of Skye create the strongest sense of awe and had drawn visitors to The Island since the days of Sir Walter Scott. Indeed, there are only 2,000 people in Portree and 10,000 people on the whole island! The Isle of Skye is joined to the mainland by the Skye Bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh and also has two mainland ferry connections from Maillag and Glenelg (summer only). The Cuillin of Skye is the island's best known feature and though their mountain peaks [View Full Entry]

The Isle of Skye is a stronghold of Gaelic culture and a paradise for walkers and anyone who wants to experience The Highlands at their most majestic and atmospheric. Skye has views over the Minch and rocky islets and the Isle of Mist as Skye is known as, is soaked in romance and myth. It was with this in mind that we decided to explore, in the guise of an independent trek on Scorrybreac or the “breadbasket of Skye”. According to an old Gaelic saying all Highlanders had a “right to a deer from the hill, a tree from the wood [View Full Entry]

Today, we're going to the Isle of Skye. We took our pre-paid / pre-paid booked coach from Inverness to Skye. ₤14 for the 3.5 hour journey. The coach was packed and “everybody” was going to the Isle of Skye”. Its a popular destination for backpackers and German-speakers! They have good taste. We have good taste too. Luckily, we had pre-paid 'cos the going rate would have been 60 pounds for the two of us. Gulp! We got to Skye about 12:00, in the town of Portree. We were at the Portree Independent Hostel which was right in the centre of town [View Full Entry]

I have been working a lot lately. On my days off I have been wondering around exploring Edinburgh. It is so amazing here. I love being in this city. I have found some cute little street and pubs. I have also found a small knitting store that sells yarn from all over Scotland. I am going to buy some as soon as I know what I want to make when I am home. This past week I fit in a 3-day tour of the Isle of Skye, which is an Island off the west coast of Scotland. It drives you through [View Full Entry]

Yes I recently discovered Highlanding is maybe not in my blood...The genetics are just not there. My legs are too short!! Not adaptable for those steep climbs, and also if i ever tried to wear a kilt, it would drag on the floor and get all muddy. Despite my shortcomings, i still tackled being a highlander as best i could, luckily the tour i hopped on for 3 days had a bus, and the hiking of the terrain was a one afternoon occasion! 3 days touring the highlands, heading all the way up to the Isle of Skye and back again, [View Full Entry]

The Sligichan Stream
The Sligichan Stream
This is where we put our faces in the water.
Today we explored the Isle of Skye. We left at 9:30 Highland time - which means around 9:45. The first place we visited was a stream called Sligichan that is between the Black and Red Cullien Mountains. The stream is part of a Highland legend about a famous warrior woman named Scáthach who was challenged by a warrior man named Cúchulainn from Ireland because he didn't believe that a woman could be a great warrior. As they were fighting her daughter saw them and was so upset for her mother's safety that she just ran away into the woods getting scrapped [View Full Entry]

We did not get a whole lot of sleep last night since we were updating our blog into the wee hours of the morning. We were up late because the internet somehow became free. That was after we had already gotten a free hour because when Christine went to pay with only a 10 pound bill and had nothing smaller, the receptionist just have it to her because there was no change available. We woke up at 7:15 to get ready to check out of our hostel and join our 3 day tour to the Highlands of Scotland. We got picked [View Full Entry]

Today we need to catch a ferry from the mainland to isle of Skye so we got up around 8, quickly ate breakfast and were on our way. We went through the Cullin mountains and stopped at the Cullin river. Rocks and mini waterfalls with huge green mountains in the distance. Seriously, I love Scotland. They really know what's important in life - the natural beauty of outdoors and having a good time. It's a very laid back, rough and ready kind of culture. If that makes sense. At Cullin River Neil told us about Scottish legends involving giants. It was [View Full Entry]

Bunny!
Well, a hello from the Isle of Skye! <3 Early on Saturday morning, after lounging about on the grass in Edinburgh, we decided to jump on a train and head ... somewhere. We weren't really sure where. So we asked our new Aussie friend Dan where to go, and he said we should Check out the Isle of Skye. So here we are! [On a side note; Garret forgot to meantion that a Highlander attempted to slip his throat on our trip up top Edinburgh castle...] We took a train from Edinbrugh to Inverness, stayed the night at a nice hotel [View Full Entry]

Highlands

Cammando Monument
Our first glimpse of Edinburgh from the air is of green fields, hills and the Firth of Forth with its two impressive bridges stretching across it. These are some of the few hills that we’ve seen in Britain, and by far the largest bridges yet. Already, we have an inkling that Scotland is going to be a very different place to England. We notice from our double deck bus heading into the city, that the red brick homes with white window frames (which we have grown so accustomed to in the Midlands) have been replaced by stone houses, most of which [View Full Entry]
