Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

The Isle of Mull is an island in the Inner Hebrides, a few miles from the coast of western Scotland. On its northernmost point lies Tobermory, an adorable port town which is the setting for the BBC children’s program ‘Balamory’; at the very south of the island, generations of Scottish kings are buried at Iona Abbey. Between its heralded tips are forty square miles of raw nature: tranquil lochs, moody glens and rugged marshland that are dashing even under grey skies. My family has travelled to Mull since the 1960s. My grandparents made friends in Tobermory after a chance t [View Full Entry]

After our narrow gauge train ride with views of the Sound of Mull and a brief respite in the Torosay Castle gardens near Craignure (pop. 200) we headed south to Bunessan (pop. 150) and our B&B (Ardtun House). The drive is only about 31 miles in distance but you might be surprised how much time it takes to travel on single track roads, even in such a remote area. Oncoming local cars, pop up sheeps, cow herds and the occasional but very large tour bus can slow you down quite a bit. I had to control myself not to dart from [View Full Entry]

On Thursday we took a ferry from Oban to a town called Craignure on the island of Mull. In Craignure we went to take a train to Torosay Castle and Gardens. So at the station we got the tickets and went to the platform and expected to get on a regular train but no! The train was like a one at an amusement park: it was small and was very slow. (Mom forgot to mention that it was a narrow gauge). We got off at the end of the train ride at Torosay and saw the train driver drive the steam [View Full Entry]

This will be a very short entry in terms of text, as a few of my readers were actually with me for this particular journey. but I really liked a few of the pictures that I took on Iona, and thought it would be a shame to keep them out of the rest of my travels. In short: My family came to visit me in Scotland the week after I had returned from Spain. Chronologically this entry should be placed between Spain and Paris, but where on earth would the fun be in that? After my return from Spain I took [View Full Entry]

Ferry to Mull I set the alarm on the mobile phone for 6am so we would have time to eat and make it to the ferry by 7:40am which is the time mom said is the latest to check in for the ferry with the car. We headed down to the lobby right before 7am (7am is when they open for breakfast) to try to grab a quick breakfast before we left for the ferry. We asked our server how to get to the where you load the cars onto the ferry. So mom pulls out the tickets and discovers that [View Full Entry]

Hello Boys and Girls! Camille and I went up to the northwest coast of Scotland last week. We went to a town called Oban. It is on the water. We took a ferry across the water to the Island Of Mull. A ferry is a large boat that can transport people and their cars across the water. There was a restaurant and even a gift shop on the ferry! Camille and I liked going to the top deck and looking out at the little islands, birds, and water as we went by. The Island of Mull does not have many people [View Full Entry]

The weather was so foul during my stay in Fort William that I didn’t stray far from the hostel. Arriving in the depressing drizzle on Sunday afternoon, I’d asked if there was anywhere in town to rent a movie - and the lovely Czech hostel manager responded by lending me her entire DVD collection. Weather forgotten, I was settling in when invited to partake of the delicious dinner the afro’d South African assistant manager was cooking up for a group of friends. In the midst of such generous hospitality I was in no hurry to leave. Being at the base of [View Full Entry]

Wednesday, August 8th - Isle of Mull- Iona Excursion We drive across Mull and take a ferry to Iona. Let’s read what the Itinerary has to say, shall we? “A leisurely day to relax and enjoy the best of the Scottish western isles. Drive across Mull for a visit to the beautiful and fascinating Isle of Iona. This is the burial place of many Scottish kings and chiefs, including Macbeth. And it is here that in 563 A.D., St. Columba established one of the earliest Christian monasteries in the British Isles. Time to visit the [url=http://guide.vi [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, August 7th - Isle of Skye to Isle of Mull: Since it is now almost a month later and I’m writing the final days (finally), I’m going to start with a quote from our lovely itinerary, “Call at the Clan Donald Centre for a visit to its MUSEUM OF THE ISLES and an insight into 13 centuries of clan history before boarding your ferry at Armadale to sail across the Sound of Sleat. Hello hello :D Just another little note before things get crazy around here. The hotel's been under renovations for the past little while and that's always a blast with a 400 y/o building! Ceilings falling in, windows leaking, etc lotsa good fun. The amount of tourists on the island is on steady increase and Easter weekend is setting up to be a mob! We've got 4 new people coming the end of this week so getting everyone organized and on the same page should be an experience. Two of those people are moving into the caravan with Dave & I [View Full Entry]
