Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

We went on a FABBY trip last weekend, by invitation from our pal Morven's parents George & Maureen, to the most beautiful island of Barra, which is one of the islands of the The Outer Hebrides on the West Coast of Scotland. You can get to Barra two ways - ferry from Oban, or flight from Glasgow. We flew. It wasn't that expensive really - about 100 pounds per person including tax and Beth went free of course as she's so teeny. Flight takes 50 mins and if it's a clear day you get the most amazing views imaginable, heading out [View Full Entry]

View from Heaval - to prove that after 4 years of saying we would climb it, we finally did!
We went home to Barra for 10 days in July and had a brilliant time. The weather was great so we spent many night sitting outside relaxing after a day's sightseeing and visiting with a glass of Magners or Wine! Morven made Craig climb Heaval, walk from Northbay to Castlebay and then cycle back! We were joined in our second weekend there by Alan, Sharon and baby Beth which was great company and beth got lots of new aunties! Overall a great week spent seeing everyone, eating huge homecooked meals (thanks mum!) and drinking lots of nice wine (thanks dad!). [View Full Entry]

the site we pitched up in total darkness the previous night, sea view
Woke up feeling refreshed to perfect blue skies and sunshine. Crawled out of the tent to see where we had actually ended up. Pretty awesome. We'd ended up next to a little cove surrounded by rolling lush green and clear sparkling blue ocean! After eating just a bit of dried fruit for breakfast (instant energy), we packed up the tents and decided to cycle south back towards Castlebay, where the ferry had dropped us off the previous night. There we got some string to try and fix my pannier rack (which managed to snap on the very first night ). We [View Full Entry]

We headed into Oban to book our £75 island rover tickets, which would pretty much let us and our bikes on any Caledonian MacBrayne ferry for the next 15 days. The woman there told us that there was a problem with the Castlebay, Barra ferry (it was broken) and that they would book us on it anyway and send us a text to let us know if it was cancelled or not. So we headed to the cafe in Tesco where we overdosed on carbohydrates and both fell asleep in the car. Never got the text but got confirmation that the [View Full Entry]

Arrived in Castlebay
Smell that fresh air
It's a five hour ferry from Oban to Castlebay but the hours went by in no time and when I arrived here I knew this place was going to amazing. There is something about pace of life here on Barra at the southern tip of the Outer Hebrides which took me in. All I have to worry about here is whether or not I'll catch a fish to cook for supper and if not then what I'll have from the local Co-Op instead. So far I've caught and cooked Brown Trout and Mackerel fresh from the sea and lochs here. There [View Full Entry]
