Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Day 9

Descent somewhere near Loch Ness
[Blogeers Note: The further north we headed into Scotland the greater the difficulty we had locating computers and uploading photographs. As a result this entry is being added a little late.] After the head wind heroics of yesterday, Day 9 was due to be a relatively short day, with reasonaby flat terrain loch side up the Great Glen and with a light tail wind. All went well initially as we hugged the edge of Loch Lochy for the first 30 miles, but things started to go a little awry at Fort Augustus at the head of Loch Ness. We stopped for [View Full Entry]

5 bikes and an Indian
Near Loch Ness

A normal rise for us today. We have got a bit planned, but not too much today. We got our clothes washed at the Laundromat and had a look around the city. We also booked our “Dolphin cruise”. This is a 2hr cruise to see some Moray Dolphins that frequent the harbour. Before the cruise, we decided to try the Pancake Parlour’s pancakes. They were huge, but very nice. After this, we went to our cruise. The cruise was quite relaxing, but there were no Dolphins to be seen at all. About all we saw was a few ducks. The trip [View Full Entry]

We had a bit of an early start today. Down for breakfast at 0730. Continental brekkie today. The start of our Loch Ness tour was at 0915, and we were going to taxi in so we didn’t have to find parking (and I wouldn’t lose us on the way back again!!). We boarded the bus and had to wait for some Americans who were there and decided to taxi back to their hotel to get some cash. After about half an hour, the coach left without them and we went to our first stop a bit south of Inverness for a [View Full Entry]

At 1,309 metres above sea level Ben Macdui is the second highest mountain in the UK and situated in the centre of the Cairngorms it is remote. The Cairngorms National Park contains the largest mountain and arctic area in Britain, is twice as big as the Lake District and boasts 52 summits over 900 metres. My plan was to walk into the Cairngorms, camp overnight among the hills, and climb the mountain the next day. So I set off around 5pm, cycled three miles along a track before leaving my bike. After an hour of evening walking the rain started. It [View Full Entry]

Hello again, Hope everyone enjoyed finally getting the answers that they've been waiting for. We've been having a great time since we left Edinburgh. We spent two days in Aberdeen where we saw some drawings by Da Vinci (I subsequently bought Da Vinci Code to read on the trip) and we took a relax nap on the Aberdeen beaches (although the weather didn't exactly cooperate - completely overcast - very Scottish). We then headed out to Inverness. We're staying at a cool little hostel which is just full of fellow Canucks. The spot is amazing, right beside the river ness and [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone! We just arrived in Inverness about 20 minutes ago. We're glad to be here because Aberdeen was a little dissappointing - there just wasn't very much to do there! We feel like we've been neglecting all the questions you guys have asked so we're gonna try to answer them all.... Kraemer - Haggis tastes like peppery meatloaf, ALex was quite fond of it and I will try it soon enough; there were no visible wearwolves in London Mom - beer is better because we haven't been hungover yet; 12 am in 7 am here - Amanda - we have [View Full Entry]

Day 67: Wednesday 12th. July 2006: Clear, cold and windy: Up early and a walk into town to get the Orkney Bus to the ferry (another fishing boat) to John O'Groats and the Orkney Bus to Inverness. A very fast drive along winding roads. We walked to the 5 star hostel - well I don't know who rated it. The shower was out of order and had been for some time, there was no toilet paper in the loos, we were in a dorm room when we expecting a twin room, and I'm sure the carpet had never been vacuumed [View Full Entry]

The LAMM

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Inverness
I've been quiet since I came back home from france - mostly because I've been working at home and didn't think a blog about working in Coleraine in an IT company would interest too many folk! ANyway, I've got a couple of updates to make now of a couple of very memorable trips. This one is about the LAMM which is a 2 day mountain marathon for 2 person teams run in scotland each year, and was run this year on the weekend of the 17th/18th AUgust. See link lamm.
