Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Happy 4th of July to everyone back in the states! Terrible weather day here for the most part. We started the day seeing a couple sights close to Inverness. The Culloden Battlefield where the Scots (who thought one of their guys should be king!) were thoroughly overmatched and routed in a battle with the British army - over 1000 killed and the battle lasted less than an hour. Then we visited Cawdor Castle (of 'Macbeth' fame). Very interesting and still lived in. We left for Edinburgh in the mid-afternoon and as we got close to the city, it finally stopped [View Full Entry]

Leslie is writing today's blog, because Emma is exhausted from all the castles we've made her explore. We left Edinburgh yesterday, crossed the Firth Of Forth bridge, and went to Pitlochry to see the salmon ladder (it helps the salmon swim upstream over the dam). Next we drove on some really narrow roads, through some amazing scenery (mountains, heather, sheep-some in the road!) We spent the night at the Kidrummy Castle Hotel (overlooking the 13th century ruins of the first castle). It was a very lovely wee castle (with no internet, John and Emma complained) We had haggis! This morning [View Full Entry]

Well, we finally had a great weather day! And perfect timing - today we went out on Loch Ness and toured Urquhart Castle. The loch was very calm and it was very picturesque. We had about a 30 minute boat ride out to the castle, whic was built to protect the southeast part of the loch. It was built in the 12th century - mostly ruins now, but enough still to identify parts of the castle grounds. Also today we did laundry! Found a laundrette in town, staffed by a wonderful woman who helped us get everything done. (She even [View Full Entry]

Coming back to a 1st world country was luxurious in so many ways. Having a clean bathroom, access to an iron, supermarkets, our own computer to use, and being able to talk the language were very enjoyable. It was all fantastic, minus the weather. Arriving in London, it was rainy, windy and bitterly cold at 11 degrees. We had a weekend in London at my sister's to meet up with friends, get over our jet-lag and to do laundry and get ready for our trip to northern England, Wales, and Scotland. On our departure day, we were so cold that [View Full Entry]

The journey to Inverness from Glasgow is one that I enjoy. The slow-moving A9 can be frustrating to the locals who battle tourists on a daily basis, but as a tourist the drive from city to lowlands, right up to the Highlands, seeing the scenery chang, always makes me smile and appreciate how lucky I am to live in Scotland, so close to all this beauty. Also, the further North you go the stranger the place names become (personal favourites include Auchtermuchty, and the River Garry which makes me snigger like a schoolboy and make bum jokes), and the number of [View Full Entry]

No Loch Ness Monsters up here in Scotland! I spent a couple of hours searching around the 70 mile lake that it is supposed to be in as well! The Loch Ness lake is obviously way bigger that I first though it would be and took a good 3 hours on bicycle to go and see only a tiny part of it then it started to pour so I turned around and headed home. So I'm up in North Scotland now but leaving tomorrow because the weather is supposed to be bad for a few days so heading to the West [View Full Entry]

…when all through the house, Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. I was working at GAP folding clothes with great care, In the hope that my Andy soon would be there. Ok, enough of that. GAP was boring, every minute felt like 10… retail is definitely not for me. I miss the rush I get from nursing. For my entire shift I was eyeing of customers wishing they would just collapse in front of me, but nooo not even a paper cut. Andrew however has had two people collapse in front of him within the space of [View Full Entry]

Hi all, We have been in Inverness since last night - well about 3:30 pm yesterday, which is actually after sunset, so technically it's night! Our accomodation here is not quite as nice as in Edinburgh. We have a private twin room, but have to share a bathroom (next door) with a few other rooms, but haven't had to wait to use it yet. In Edinburgh, we stayed in a newly refurbished hostel, so all the fittings were almost brand new and our private triple room had an ensuite bathroom and a little table and chairs to sit at. We wanted [View Full Entry]

Today’s rather odd title refers to the local name for Inverness, a town in north-central Scotland. It’s actually Ally’s hometown, although his parents are from the Isle of Skye, where everyone speaks “the Gaelic.” Anyway, the convoluted etymology behind this bizarre nickname proceeds thusly: Inverness means “town at the point.” It is located at the "point" of Loch Ness, the second longest loch in Scotland and home of the famous monster. At its north end, Ness comes to a point where it flows out into the River Ness. The River Ness twists and turns [View Full Entry]

This is the view from Inverness Castle.
Inverness is currently the fastest growing city in the UK. I was only there 2 nights but I liked it a lot. Its clean and tidy and central to much of the Highlands of Scotland. Unfortunately the weather was not so nice when it poured most of the day whilst I trudged round Fort George nicely snug in my waterproofs. I pretty much had the place to myself and the audio tour actually wasn't too bad. I met a couple of Canadian girls at the hostel that evening and we joined in with some Scottish dancing at a local pub and [View Full Entry]
