Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

It's Over! We had a beautiful day at the castle. It was windy but the only day this week it didn't rain and there was sun. We were picked up at the hotel by a 1946 Rover. The driver had to wait a bit cause we having a bit of trouble getting those weird laces to stay tied on the shoes Ernest was wearing. It was so cool riding in this car out to the castle. Ernest can tell more about the car details cause he's into that stuff, but it was cool. We arrived at the castle and our videographer [View Full Entry]

Our last day in Scotland is clear blue sky and in the 60's. A great way to end our week of Loch monsters, castles, battlefields, shopping, fish and chips, salmon from the River Ness, Haggis every morning, and even the occasional Chinese restaurant Ernest managed to find to get his fix, along with the one-pond store. Another generation of Chou's is now officially married in Scotland. Some of you may not be aware that Ernest's parents, James and Nellie, were married in Glasgow at the end of World War II when they were students here. That adds another special connection to [View Full Entry]

And I'm not the one shopping. Ernest started the day in search of new tartan ties for himself since he'd bought some on his last trip to Scotland that had lasted 10 years. While in search of these, we found t-shirts on sale for 5 GBP and he bought out his size. We then went to the Highland store looking for those elusive ties, and this really cute little Scottish lass was wearing a tartan skirt that Ernest fell in love with. And she began to charm him. Now here comes the BIG surprise...... After days of pressure from flight attendants, [View Full Entry]

Today we trekked out to the Culloden Battlefield, another history day for me of course. But first, we went to the Registrar's office and gave them all the original documents they needed to see so we could get the license, or certificate, we need to have to be signed after the ceremony. Ernest insisted we get it out of way just in case anything else went wrong. Now I find out my dress won't be delivered to the hotel until 12:30 on Thursday, my wedding day, when we are supposed to leave the hotel at 2:00 for the castle. Am I [View Full Entry]

Today was amazing! We took a tour of Loch Ness (not the amazing part) and went to Urquhart Castle where we are getting married (that's the amazing part). It is everything I hoped it would be. I'm so excited to be getting married there even if I don't know exactly where cause it doesn't matter. It is all so cool. Ok, here's the history part which everyone who knows me knows that is what makes this place so amazing, so if you find history boring, skip on down. The ruins of the castle date from the 13th century and the last [View Full Entry]

After 24 hours of traveling, including 3 planes and airport wait times, we finally made it Inverness around noon local time. It was overcast and drizzling when we landed but it cleared soon after we got to the hotel and stayed clear all day. And COOL! Blessedly cool for me, not cold, but after Houstons summer, I was feeling much better. Our hotel overlooks the River Ness and across the river is Inverness Castle so great view from the room. Ernest took a picture. Inverness, although called the capital of the Highlands, is not large by our standards and can be [View Full Entry]

7 Days to go.........That's only ONE WEEK !!!! (breathe..just breathe) I know, it sounds a little crazy to some, very crazy to others, that we are going to Scotland to marry. This has been my dream since I was a little girl, I read too many fairy tales, and since this is my first marriage (and not Ernest's ) I got to do whatever I wanted. The powers that be knew what they were doing by having me marry later in life cause I never could have afforded this earlier, and my Dad would have never stood for it either!... My [View Full Entry]

Trying to make this marriage legal Since August, I have been working with the British Consulate to obtain a special visa to permit Ernest and me to get married legally in Scotland. For those of you who aren't aware, the British government in their infinite wisdom decided to require people wanting to marry in the UK to complete a full visa application, including life history of you and parents, financial status and work history plus fingerprints. Ok, I'll follow the rules. So I work to submit the applications in plenty of time. Now these apps sit in the British Consulate in [View Full Entry]

High tea hi! Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Inverness
Inverness - Findochty - Spey Bay - Cullen - Portgordon This is a land of lochs and whisky, seascapes, seals and sunsets. Aye, Pat and I are in the north of Scotland - not yet at the most northernmost tip of mainland Britain but a fair way north anyway. That northerly point has to wait a day or two. For now, we’re staying with friends at Findochty, about 50 miles to the east of Inverness Airport and not far from the town of Buckie on the road towards Aberdeen. This quiet, former fishing village, pronounced by the few remaining natives as [View Full Entry]
