Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

July 12, 2008 We have now entered into Scotland and arrived in the city of Edinburgh. This city is very different from its English neighbour. Many of the streets are still mostly cobblestone and instead of using mainly red brick like England, it uses a greyish stone to build their homes and buildings. Due to the type of stones they use, the stones tend to turn dark with age giving the city a dark gothic feel. One of the most famous features of the city is the Edinburgh castle which sits in the center of the city. Even though we [View Full Entry]

It's the first of August. Hurrah! Its still summer!! The evening before, we arrived Glasgow after 10p.m. and made our way to our last accommodation in Scotland. I had reserved two nights at the “Eurohostel Glasgow” for the special deal of ₤37.50 per night including continental breakfast. We were so exhausted the night before but it was good to be in our own bunked private double room with ( I must compliment them on this ) clean, crisp, cool, white cotton bedsheets! The plan today is: To have no plans! Nah! Just kidding!! Seriously though, today was [View Full Entry]

Here we are enjoying Glasgow and the weather is very fine. Ruby and I had a day out at the Falkirk wheel with two friends George, Preya and baby Lesa. This is a wheel that lifts two boats canal boats up the 35m difference between two canals the Forth & Clyde and Union by lifting two boats quickly and simply as possible. The Millennium Link as it is called was an ambitious £84.5m project with the objective of restoring navigability across Scotland on the historic Forth & Clyde Canal and the Union Canals, providing a corridor of regenerative activity through central [View Full Entry]

Good Morning Friends and Family! After a cooked English breakfast for me and half a plate and lots and lots of cereal for “The Small Young Gentleman”, we went to the Glasgow University via the Kelvin Grove Park and the River Kelvin. As I said earlier, we were in the university district area and so the main campus area was a 20 minute walk away. Surprisingly, the weather stayed pretty dry with only short drizzles of rain. We visited the Hunterian Art Gallery and Museum which had exhibitions of weird and wonderful things spanning from abnormality in animals to amazement of [View Full Entry]

I woke up at 06:00 in order to do last minute-minute tidying up, give away my still fresh fruit and veg to my student neighbours, do the last dish wash and wash my hair! Wash my hair? Well you never know!! We took the local bus to the Berlin Main Train Station ( Hbf ) and after hugs and goodbyes went on the Regional Train that had a stop-off at Schönefeld Airport. We arrived there a little after 12 Noon and after slight bag adjustments for the benefit of security control, went through with no problems at all. My belt didn't [View Full Entry]

The channel Four programme last night on the so called street weapons commission was very thorough and in depth in its overview of the subject of the rot that has set into gang cultures such as Glasgow...Liverpool ...Manchester and south London... but - it forgot one most important thing... what is the root and the falldown of society and its atavistic craving for violence and a gang culture? yes we can say the need to belong to an extended family, a brotherhood of people that will stand up for you.. the pack that is able to fight for you... but - [View Full Entry]

England. No I didn't kneel down and kiss the shore as I landed, but I almost wanted too. In true British fashion we were an hour late arriving, then we had to go through customs and convince them that we weren't here to stay. They had two customs officers to process the entire ship, so we snuck into the middle of a bunch of harley davidson riders and as they just pushed their way to the front of the queue, well we were just innocently taken along for the ride. Then just past customs were all th [View Full Entry]

Hey Everybody, and Happy Canada Day! I got into Glasgow last Thursday morning, and it's been great so far. The weather is kind of what I expected. It's pretty grey most of the time and it's been raining on and off. That's ok though, because it's been a blast! Last Friday was the Radiohead concert, which was an awesome time. It was an outdoor concert, so I was quite pleased with myself for remembering my rain jacket, because it POURED! It was such a great atmosphere though. And Radiohead was SO GOOD! For all of you at home who are seeing [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone!! Well, I made it to London on the morning of the 17th of June, and promptly jigged accross London and got on the train to Glasgow, Scotland. It was a beautiful trip to travel up the east coast of England/Scotland, and was a nice break after the long flight. I snoozed off and on and was entranced by the Scottish countryside. Simply beautiful! I arrived in Glasgow about 7 or 8 pm to find it pouring rain (it started raining just as I pulled into the station). I took a few minutes to orient myself and decided [View Full Entry]
