Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Just a note: The next few posts will be a little out of order as we tool pictures using two different cameras and I need my Dad to email me some photos before I do some posts Alright so we arrived in Glasgow late on the 14th after a long train ride from London. The train was around 6 hours as we went North. It was a Virgin train and was really quite fancy; free wi-fi, complimentary food and drink and power outlets. It was a great way to travel and to top it all off they never validated my Britrail [View Full Entry]

Monday 1 September and Tuesday 2 September If it's Tuesday it must be Barcelona! I have always wanted to say that. Being on holiday is like being in a time warp not knowing when or where we are. We finally arrived in Barcelona after 2 days of travelling starting with the 5 hour ferry ride from Barra to Oban, a 3 hr drive from Oban to Glasgow and then the 2 flights today to get us to Barcelona at lunchtime. We also went from 13 degrees to 33 degrees. Talk about a shock to the system! We had a well earned [View Full Entry]

Who: Vic & Chuck Destination: Scotland Why: To get out of town and do some hiking and climbing Driving: The somewhat reliable Accord This was a completely unplanned trip. Almost anyway, we knew we were driving North. The start is typical of most trips: Pack Vehicle, use bathroom, go--> Get near destination and realize you forget something. I forgot to rent a climbing harness...the primary purpose of the trip was to do some climbing. So much for that. Plan B: Party... Nothing is cheap over here, especially lodging and alcohol. Luckily I brought the alcohol to prestage, then we hea [View Full Entry]

We left Oban on Sunday morning and turned back toward Edinburgh as the tour drew closer to a finish. Ewan took a gamble and took us down an amazing (and narrow, probably too narrow for the bus but Ewan worked his magic and the roads weren't too flooded) route through what Ewan called teletubby land. Beautiful rolling grassy hills with a small stream cutting through and great little farm houses dotted the country side. The ground was still soaked from the nights rain but the sun had just come out and as we drove everything shimmered and glowed in a truly [View Full Entry]

So we thought we'd try and start this blog thing with a bit about the two nights out we had on the 2nd and 9th of Aug in Glasgow. Some of the two families met up for a meal in Konaki's Greek Restaurant, which turned out to be a brilliant night with further drinks back in the flat in Peel Street (sob, sob, goodbye loyal flat!) and Donald Where's Your Troosers followed by Wild Rover til late in the night! Someone dragged their poor son up to dance to Abba (thanks Mam!) and that started off the dancing. Brilliant night was [View Full Entry]

Hello All, well we've finally made it to Scotland after a gruelling 9 hour bus ride yesterday from London. We're in a internet cafe in Glasgow awaiting our meet-up with Heather in a train station just outside the city. Jay has been uber excited for days now. We'd heard that Glasgow was a scary place but so far we've found it to be great. The hostel we're in is massive and they have a free coffee machine so what more do you need really! We got to see some early Olympic coverage too as the heptathlon coverage started at 2:30am here. [View Full Entry]
