Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Hello everyone, So it's been a while since the last post and that would be because not too much has been happening that's been news worthy and also because I've been quite busy trying to avoid writing essays (Hey, guess what I'm not doing right now!). Halloween over here was quite a fun event. I, along with about half of my class went over to a friends house to celebrate. It was a good time and there were quite a few impressive costumes. The day after that I went to see Quantum of Solace with some friends and I would definitely [View Full Entry]

Hello again everyone and a fair day to you all. So about a weekish ago Vanessa and Marina and I all decided to hop on the train and head over to Glasgow, which is the fancy shopping capital of Scotland, as well as being the most dangerous city in the European Union. But let's face it Glasgow is really pretty benign and I generally feel safer walking in East Glasgow (the not so lovely part) at 9 o'clock at night than I would walking in say S. Toms River at high noon. But nevermind, cops here don't even carry guns so [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone, So there isn't much going on for me to tell you about so I think the next few posts might just be about day to day life in Glasgow. So Banking is the UK is difficult for someone from overseas. I tried to set up a bank account first thing when I got over here but that didn't really work out. For starters you need to be aware that debit cards aren't the same as in Canada; over here they're a mix of credit cards and debit cards on one card. This means that to get one of these [View Full Entry]

Okay, so this is the start of Nikki and Greg's travel blog for Australia. Obviously we are not there yet so there isn't really much to tell as of yet! We are still trying to get organised for going, which is a bit of a daunting process, especially as those who know us will understand how disorganised and flaky I am and how disorganised and laid back Greg is! So far we have managed to book our accomodation for Perth when we arrive and have our working holiday visas and travel insurance organised. We still have a range of things to [View Full Entry]

Hey Everyone, So I thought I'd share some pictures from in around the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery, which is conveniently only about a 10 minute walk from my place and free (so not a bad way to spend and afternoon). The building is split up into two areas where the bottom floor is a museum and the top is an art gallery. The museum is your basic museum fare: animal skeletons, stuffed animals, some ancient artifacts, and educational materials. The art gallery portion is mainly older style classical art (i.e. not modern art) and doesn't have anything too famous (though [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone, It's quite late here, or early depending on how you want to look at it, and I'm just watching the VP debate now and thought I would do a quick update and upload some old pictures. While in London my Dad and I went to go see Emirates stadium (where Arsenal plays) and did a tour there. It was really quite amazing to go behind the scenes of such a high tech stadium. I think the stadium is only a few years old and the technology incorporated is ridiculous; for example the tour guide was telling us that the [View Full Entry]

As promised, pictures, finally! Well....2...that's all I had time to upload at the library a couple of days ago....Kinda pathetic, a picture of my bed in Edinburand what goes for fun you can buy in any pub on the Royal Mile, haha! I'm going to barricade myself in the library tomorrow and try to get the rest of them up...so much to tell, but I don't want to narrate without visuals! Sorry to be a tease [View Full Entry]

Hey Everyone, So I've just been getting myself settled in and set-up over here. A lot of things take a ridiculous amount of time to do over here (but there will be more on that later). So far I've only had one class here and it was alright; it was a class on research methods so it wasn't the most thrilling 2 hours of my life. The last couple of days were spent doing orientations here and I got to meet some of my classmates and professors and everyone seems really nice. I also got to go to the Heatherington Research [View Full Entry]

Well here we are back in Glasgow after completing the glorious West Highland Way. "Not easy," says Don. A three hour train ride back to Glasgow today from Fort William was quite a shock considering it took us ten days to do the same route on foot due to horrible colds, injuries and the staggering weight of our packs. (We broke down and used a pack service to shuttle them ahead of us for most of it) It was quite an interesting trek and took far longer than we had expected but full of incredible scenery and wonderful people. At the [View Full Entry]

No visit would be complete without a trip to Milngavie. I was there for a week and had a few trips into the village. it was interesting going with Granma - every place we looked at she would say "I remember this - that there used to be a bakery which made the best cream cakes" or "that was a weeee sweetie shop that sold such and such" it was great. I think it wouldnt have quite been the same to visit Milngavie without granma being there. of course the family are all brilliant and had alot of really good stories. [View Full Entry]
