Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Bonnie Scotland Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Glasgow
What does Bonnie mean anyhow? According to Google, the highest rated definition refers to a benchmark which measures the performance of Unix file system operations. Now I don't know about you, but I don't think the Unix filesystem has been around for as long as the Scottish dialect. This is just one of the many things that would confound me throughout our journey in Scotland. Luckily I have a better half that is more than capable of helping me out in this area whilst at the same time giving me the quizzical look of someone who has just been asked a [View Full Entry]

Anne and Ann
Xmas in Glasgow
Trossacks

Hi everyone, So I go back to Glasgow a week ago after spending about a month in Canada for the Christmas break. It was good to be home but I guess it's back to work for me. The trip back wasn't too bad except that Heathrow was covered in a nice layer of fog that made taking off impossible, so I was stuck there for an extra two hours making my entire layover 6 hours long. It could have been worse though at least I had an essay to write, one due the Monday after I got back, and all the [View Full Entry]

It looks like Rain-Dear.......ho ho ho
Its the Fire Brigade.........

So I know I said the last post would be the last one for a while but I found out a Christmas tradition that is too great not to share. So today was the last day of classes for the semester and the entire class, prof and all, went out to the pub for a few drinks. As the group began to dwindle a few of us decided to go out to get some pizza for dinner. There was me, David from Ayere (the Langley of Glasgow from my understanding), Hannah from Germany and Laura a Catalan from Spain. I'll warn [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone, So I don't really have a lot to update but I figured I should sneak in one more before I'm back in Canada. Since the last post (which apparently was almost a month ago) I've mainly been working on getting my essays over here done, which I'm glad to say they are! I wasn't out of school for that long before coming here, technically only for the summer but that last semester was a bit of a joke, so you wouldn't think that getting back into the groove of writing essays would be that hard but I struggled. I [View Full Entry]

November 2006 - December 2007 - TO RELOCATE OR NOT TO RELOCATE...??? Back in the summer of 2006, as my travelling buddy Melina and I were waiting at Singapore airport for Clark in the Philippines. I thought I would check my e-mail as internet access at the airport was free. I received an e-mail from our then manager advising us to give her a call or let her know what number is best to contact me on. Melina and I were wondering what it was that she wanted to tell us??? I really wanted to ring her there and then, but [View Full Entry]
