Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

04.00 Friday the 8th of May - Alarm went off and although I had been waiting for this morning to come, I wish I had more time to sleep. Owen and I had been in the World End's pub the night before for the pub quiz, which was quite enjoyable, even more so as we came fourth out of 15 teams!!! Result!!! Considering, there was just Owen and I and most teams had at least minimum four. After 10 minutes, I finally decided to get up and pack ready for the much anticipated long weekend ahead! This was after all my [View Full Entry]

Hello all! I got into Glasgow last night at 12:00 midnight! There is a bank holiday in the UK so everyone is travelling. There was at least 3 slow areas on the highways and one complete traffic jam right around Lancaster. I loved the bus ride! I ate a lot of sandwiches, I woke up my bunk mates when I came in...the end. I went to one museum today - a very big museum kelvindale museum. It has everything from the stuffed elephant to Monet and rembrant originals. My favourite exhibits were the animals of Scotland and all about Glasgow. So really I did learn a lot today! I'm enjoying a pint of strongbow in the hostel bar and may go out with one of my roommates tonight. I had my first fish and chips in the museum cafe. You know you're a backpacker when you eat everything on your plate. I also saw a history of scotland in fighting presentation. I also went [View Full Entry]

Hello all, So another semester ends here in sunny old Glasgow. The last few weeks have been very very hectic trying to get all the end of semester assignments done. Quite a few late nights to get essays done followed by quite a few late nights celebrating the finishing of those essays. The day the essay was due was of course the obligatory afternoon/night where the majority of the politics department, despite all nighters, wander between pubs in the West End and pretend they're still undergrads. That was followed with a party the next day, which while fun was very subdued [View Full Entry]

Well, the weather sure does shift when you fly halfway around the world....after about2 1/2 months of tempuratures in the high 80's or low 90's, we're in Glasgow, where is it is grey, rainy, and in the 40's....we love it! We shipped some clothes from Tokyo over to London and it feels so nice to wear fresh clothes with my Tokyo coat, hat, and shoes back into the wardrobe. The timing couldn't have been better as pretty much all the clothes I've been wearing over the past couple months are threadbare and ready for the bin. It feels really nice to [View Full Entry]

About 2 1/2 weeks ago I was talking to my friend Christy (who goes to Georgia Tech with me) about when I would be visiting her in Scotland. She is studying at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow (pronounced glazz-go), and before leaving Atlanta in December we both said that we would visit eachother. Later that day I found a great deal on Ryanair and booked a one-way ticket on a whim to go visit her. *I also bought a one-way plane ticket to Ireland, but that will be a whole different blog entry.* Wednesday, Feb. 18th I woke up at [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone, It's been a little while since the last update, mainly because I'm lazy and there hasn't been too much to write about, and for that I apologize. School has been going fairly well and the first semester is officially over as papers for those class have all been handed in. Now being half way through the second semester, or at least close enough, I can say that my classes are all quite interesting but the main focus for the next few weeks is gearing up to start on the dissertation. Proposals are due in a few weeks and some [View Full Entry]

...and that's after a few hours

Update time!!! Okay so its been officially two weeks tomorrow, since i've moved in, and I am loving every minute being here, i love having my own rooma as I have had my 'alone' time which is so deeply needed and appreciated here. Although my flat seems to be the quiet flat, if i want to talk to someone i normally have to go see them, which can be annoying when its snowing and you really cannot be bothered leaving the flat (although the guys are literally next door!) Its been snowing today since early afternoon, its so pretty, but somehow [View Full Entry]
