Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

The past week has been busy. I have been traveling between fishing venues to help out the time figure out what is working. Ive been the the River Tay and Loch Leven. Most beautiful places I have ever seen. The River tay is very long running through a little town called Stanley. Parts of the Tay river are private areas owned by wealthy families. Luckily we were allowed onto this private areas for the competition. Large homes sitting on the river, talk about living the dream. Leven is very big and I could not make it around the whole Loch, but [View Full Entry]

After leaving Norway we decided to continue our European travels and go to Glasgow, Scotland to re-meet my (Cliff’s) family. My mom is from here and it’s been nearly 30 years since I’ve visited. I had vague memories of some of the places I had visited when I was young. Ruthie has met some of the family but never traveled to Scotland. Checking these spots out with Ruthie was a lot of fun. We were very fortunate to stay with family, thank you Marion and Peter and also Stevie and Allison. It was not like our usual mad touring but more [View Full Entry]

Friday May 29th we arrived at 5:30am which is actually 2:30am our time. 6 hours on an airplane with some local Scots men getting pissed drunk on the airplane and making a lot of noise. Needless to say we did not sleep because of this and because I got the worst case of 'jimmy legs' which kept Chris up. All I could think was, I am becoming more like my mom every day and being a caged bear on the airplane proved that fact to Chris and I. We waited at the airport waiting for someone to pick us up and [View Full Entry]

I am embarrassed to write this entry. I am hanging my head in shame. My first attempt to hike the West Highland Way was a pretty dismal failure. But in my defence, I have never long-distance hiked before. It was bound to be a rocky start. In retrospect, starting with a 7-day, 95 mile hike through rugged, hilly Highland territory all by my lonesome was pretty... ambitious... if not just plain fool-hearty. It went like this. I intended to start on Monday, May 18. I was a barrel of nerves about it -- still only one day after getting back from [View Full Entry]

Week one After a gruelling 5 hours on the coach from Birmingham to Glasgow, we arrived on a rainy and horrible day at Glasgow's Tramway. I was greeted by my host family, Colin, Irene and Paul, who greeted me very warmly and made sure i felt right at home straight away. Sarmad and I were driven back to the house in Colin's van/home made caravan(!) in record timing according to Paul! When we arrived, i looked acroos the road and saw a golf course, looked at the front garden which is actually part of the graveyard they live in! The house [View Full Entry]

Isn't it reat when your day seeing a city coincides with a public holiday, not much was open. We walked around the university, watched rangers win the scottish premiership on the tv in a pub and observed a lot of drunk people walking the streets trying to start fights with celtic fans who were also playing that day. The tourism part of my trip is coming to an end: tomorrow I take my first camping-hiking trip to the Isles of Arran and Islay (pronounced Ille-lah, I've learned). But today I'm enjoying my 3rd day in Glasgow. I can't get over how beautiful this country is. I had a great time in Edinburgh. I was worried about the hostel when I booked it: a 14-bed dorm room and only £11 per night. Surely a terrible dive, I thought. But I'd forgotten an important rule in backpacking travel: just because it's the cheapest, doesn't mean it's not the coolest. As I've [View Full Entry]

Well here we go again, 6+1 go mad in Scotland again!!!!!. This is the first trip of the year and we are soooooo looking forward to it, as we need to get out and about this year, having not gone to Asia. Joining us this year is Frank, a fit energetic adventurer (what??), who is equally at home in the big outdoors, as he is in the local boozer..... (NOT!) Frank ("when is the next pub-stop") Suarez is joining the usual suspects this year myself (Angela), Dave, John, Sally, Nicky and Clive (our entertainments manager for reasons I am sure will [View Full Entry]
