Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

In Glasgow we departed at the Buchanan Bus Station and walked a few blocks to the mall with a food court. Lunch at Burger King hit the spot. Outside a band camped on the pedestrian street and played tunes for tips as we avoided that side and disappointed the next "Beatles." Glasgow had a lot of dingy stone buildings. One of them had a 50 foot square banner advertising a music festival which I'm sure the aforementioned "Beatles" would participate. The bus, 5.85 pounds/$11 each to the Ryan Air, Glasgow Prestwick Airport had a salty, unfriendly, chip on his shoulder [View Full Entry]

Just to let you know Glasgow didn’t blow my mind, compared to the rest of Scotland i thought it was shit. I got to Glasgow yesterday around 1pm, I made my way to the hostel and dropped of my bags and set out to see some of the city. I walked down the main street and saw some less than average break dancers busking for money and then made my way to the park by the river and relaxed for a couple of hours. I went to back to the hostel which is massive by the way but quite nice, I [View Full Entry]

Aye ah' morning ta yah. So Scotland has been an absolute whirlwind...though, of course, amazing. Perfect temps here as well. Glasgow's treating me proper - went for a run in the park on Sunday (after being kept up in Oslo again then night before...by the same snorer! Fate has a sense of irony, to be sure.), then yesterday rented a car and drove up to Glen Coe for some amazing hiking. I had rented a tiny little car (the "4 wheels w/optional transmission option"), but as they were slammed and couldn't be bothered they gave me a 4-WD Nissan instead! Driving [View Full Entry]

After a morning of wandering around Newcastle, and taking photos of all the bridges and fantastic buildings, I left Anna and Alan and their wonderful flat, to head back to Glasgow. Of course I came back to a torrential downpour and a room in a hostel which is down a corridor filled with all kinds of building materials. Apparently they're remodeling some of the rooms, and have decided that it's okay to leave sanders, plaster, toilets, and various other oddities all over the floor of the hall. And it's not like carrying two backpacks in a normal hall isn't difficult enough! [View Full Entry]

So here it is! The first few days of my trip summed up in one blog.... The flight over was, um, trying. The seat was okay, and they were showing the movie "Duplicity". Glad I never paid money to see that movie. Considering it was Julia Roberts and Clive Owen, I thought it would have been much better than it was. The dinner was so-so. Pasta with chicken. Should have ordered the non-chicken version. :( And then I tried to sleep. Not so easy, sitting next to the snuffalopagus. Every 5 minutes, the guy beside me snuffled. Not sniffed like trying [View Full Entry]

This morning we had a quick breakfast and then it was off to Glasgow. We caught the 941am train to Oxenholme and then the 1028am train to Glasgow Central. We arrived in Glasgow at about 12:40pm, picked up our tickets for tomorrow, then walked to our hotel (the Victorian House) on Renfrew Street. We only had the one day in Glasgow so we set out as soon as we dropped off our bags in the room. We walked first to Tenement House only to find out that there was a fee to go inside (after I’d read on the internet that [View Full Entry]
