Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Howdy! Well, it was another glorious rainy day in Scotland! Today has been a very lazy day for me. I slept until 11:30, which is a new record for me, had a Twix bar for lunch and then I headed up to the internet café where I stayed all afternoon with some of my friends watching videos on You Tube such as “Cruising in Kennett” and “Kitchens in Kennett.” Everybody got a good laugh. I also got caught up on some of the Olympic action. Speaking of getting caught up; we were all catching up on U.S. news because we just [View Full Entry]

Hey Ya’ll! So, last night’s performance in a misty rain didn’t go so well. We “got a talkin’ to” and everybody was pretty bummed. My flat mates and I stayed up until 2:00 am eating to get over our worries! You would not believe the amount of food we can eat! (Now, I’m not saying I ate all of this, but this is what we demolished) Pizza, fries, chicken nuggets, chips and salsa, cocoa pops, ramen noodles, Uncle Ben’s rice, Pasta shells, a cheeseburger, garlic bread, shortbread cookies, Oreos, Twix, Coke, Sprite, lemonade, chocolate milk and my [View Full Entry]

Hello all you happy peppy people in the land of 110 degree heat index! I saw that on weather.com yesterday. Since I wrote my last blog yesterday afternoon, I wasn’t able to tell you about our performance last night. Well, something happened last night during that performance that I never thought I would see in my life… I could see my breath in August!! Yes, it was 50 degrees, windy, and very rainy! Mr. Bernhardt said he has seen the Tattoo probably 65 times in his life, and has never seen it rain like that! Thank goodness our uniforms (which have [View Full Entry]

Wind Blown
Wind Blown
I didn't have a better picture to post, so I just wanted to make you laugh
Greetings from not-so-sunny Edinburgh! I have been on the internet all day uploading new photos to facebook and to my past blogs. If you find the time, go back through my old blogs and check out the new pictures. I had the best cup of hot cocoa today! It had marshmallows and whipped cream on top! MMMMM!!! I talked to Mom over Skype just now, and I still think Skype is the neatest thing! Our performance last night went well, but it is amazing how the audience's reaction can change. We had a very dead audience last night, they didn't even [View Full Entry]

Well, it is currently 11:00 a.m. Some of you may be wondering "But Brooke, you're supposed to be in Glasgow today!" You are correct. So, we get up this morning, rush through breakfast and get back and wait, wait, and wait a bit more for the buses (look Mom! I spelled buses correctly!) but they never showed up. Turns out the Tattoo people never booked our buses, so we are the only cast members not in Glasgow today. Most of the band is happy, but I'm a bit bummed that I'm only an hour away from Glasgow and don't get to [View Full Entry]

Boy, have I had an exciting few weeks! Well, to begin I will tell everyone who doesn't know- I GOT A JOB! I still need to get another one, because it's only for the weekends right not, but it's pretty great. I, Heather Adams, work at the castle! The Edinburgh castle...it's the only one in Edinburgh. While in Edinburgh, I say, why not work at the castle! I really love that I can say that. Also, um...I've got a boyfriend now. :) He's pretty amazing except for the fact that he doesn't live here anymore. He moved to New Zealand [View Full Entry]

The crowd getting into the Military Tattoo
It was crazy, 8000 odd people trying to get in, it took about an hour to get everyone in
Edinburgh, Woohoo! Bring on the Military Tattoo! Wow, what a show! I loved every minute of it. The performers were awesome and I am sooo glad that Philip could get us tickets for it. Thank you Phil, we love you. Yesterday, Deb and I did the Hop On Hop Off Tour, then saw the opening parade for the Fringe Festival, so we saw all the performers of the Tattoo in that again so that was good, did lots of shopping and visited the Royal Palace. This morning before leaving I did a tour of the Edinburgh Castle which was really good [View Full Entry]

Golfers of the world, time to get jealous!!! This morning, 3 guys, Dr. Conger, and I set off for our 9:00 tee time at Swantson Golf Course. This place is GORGEOUS!! It sets on one of the highest points in Edinburgh and you can see out for miles, even into the North Sea. Conger got us a great deal! I paid 15 pounds total for green fees, cart rental, and club rental!! I thought I would be renting clubs that looked like they came from a flee market. Not hardly!! As we got there a man was UNWRAPPING the new “Ram” [View Full Entry]
