Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

This paper came out the day of Opening night
Today has been a very funny day! You want to know why? Because I did not know that tonight was opening night until we got to the castle! I thought all day today that this was another dress rehearsal and filming night. It’s okay though, because it kept me from being nervous all day. I went to the grocery store for the first time today, which was a neat trip. It is so cool to see all the different products and packaging that they have here. For example Cadberry is the equivalent to our Hershey, if you want to buy the [View Full Entry]

Politically Incorrect Chocolate

With much sadness in my heart the train pulled away from Waveley Bridge bound for London. It had been a completely hectic week with my last day at Lab901 on the Friday the 25th with a leaving do starting at work in the sun. A unique but very special peer based psychological profile was delived by Stuart which I think left everyone that little bit sader I'm moving on. Yeah right some of you might say. From there with all the packing, preparing and with Simo and my last days togther for a while it was a rather frantic couple of [View Full Entry]

The afternoon curriculum - technology.
31st July Well we've come out of the Yorkshire Dales and found the internet again. What a fantastic place Yorkshire is. Absolutely beautiful plus we had fantastic weather. We stayed at Sally and Jos' home - with the cows, dog and the beck (creek). We had a day at home when we first arrived. The kids had their first day of school. That was interesting. Now Gareth and I have roles but back then we were just learning. We now know who works best with whom. Then Ben and the Hughes Brothers (Ben came to the school of Hughes as well) [View Full Entry]

It has been a fantastic day! We had the entire day free because tonight was the first dress rehearsal and filming night for the media. I did my entire souvenir shopping today, and I may need to pawn off some of my things in order to have some money!! Haha, just kidding! It’s funny, because the cashier will tell you your total cost and you’ll think “Ah, that’s not bad for all of this,” but then you convert it from pounds to dollars and you say, “Oh my…” I got some really nice items from the Tattoo office and shop, including [View Full Entry]

The Boys in their Souvenirs!

The North Sea
The North Sea
Yeah, this is from my dorm window!
(First of all, allow me to apologize for not posting for a while. We have limited internet connection while we are here, and the connection I’m currently using is costing me an arm and a leg! We’ve also been at it from 6am-11pm everyday since we’ve been in Edinburgh. Remember to check back to these for added pictures. You have a lot of reading to do! Remember to read these in chronological order.) Well, I got up this morning and saw out the window for the first time the North Sea! It has been too foggy to see up until now. [View Full Entry]

The Castle and Esplanade
Green Castle
Rehearsal at the Barracks

Saturday morning: My alarm goes off at 6am. I had gotten home from the bar at 2am that night (which is actually a lot earlier than usual) so obviously 6am came much too soon. But I got myself out of bed and headed to the train station. On my way there Alex sent me a text message saying that her train from Hampton had been delayed. I told her not to worry, she had plenty of time. After all, our train wasn’t set to depart until 8:30am, and it was only 7am at the time. But then I got to the [View Full Entry]

Trumpets in the Rain
Trumpets in the Rain
That's me on the left
Today started at 5:15 am with no breakfast and pouring rain!!! We had a 6:00 rehearsal on the castle esplanade in ponchos and then we headed off to the military barracks for the rehearsal for the finale with the whole cast which was neat. But first, we had breakfast, so I was happy. During the finale we stand behind the Norwegian military band and can’t see the conductor because every one of them are 6 feet tall or more! They made fun of us and squatted down as they played! Oh, every one of those guys are blonde haired and blue-eyed, [View Full Entry]

Yay! Trip #2!
I'm gonna step out-of-order for a spell to write about the most recent trip that I took. I arrived back in London a few days ago and I want to write about it while it is still fresh in my mind. While I'm a city-girl and love city life, cities can rarely be described as visions of beauty. While I remember Paris and Madrid as being beautiful, my 14-year-old self might not be super trustworthy in that area (my eyes were only tuned in to the beauty of the boys, to be frank). San Francisco and Los Angeles, two cities I [View Full Entry]

Today started at 6:35am!! We went to the military base to rehearse on a surface that is similar to the esplanade at the castle. We met the rest of the international cast which was neat-o! After the rehearsal we headed to the Lord Provost (mayor) of Edinburgh’s house to perform for him. As we pulled up to the city chambers, there was a crowd of people waiting for us, mostly the British National News media. Seriously, we are celebrities! After we performed, the Lord Provost welcomed us to the City and told us that the city has been awaiting the GEMB’s [View Full Entry]

Wow, lots of driving and I can't remember where I left off, so I will go with the short version. Scotland is amazing to get out and see. Quite possibly one of my 3 favorite countries now. We drove from Stirling the other day all the way past Fort William, the island of Skye and right through much of the Highlands. Stayed at a castle in northern Scotland and got up yesterday to go to Uruqhot (spelling?0 Castle on Loch Ness and were the only ones out there for the first 15 minutes as we got there right at opening.
