Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Tag 78: Edinburgh - Forsyth - ..., 19.75 km, Fahrzeit 1:21, Durchschn.

Day 12: Travel to Scotland: 6th day of study tour Yet again another early morning. We met for breakfast and made sure everyone was ready before taking the bus to the train station. Once there we waited for our train. We got on the train and I fell alseep for until an announcement came on that said there was complimentary WiFi! Really! I was so excited I woke up and got out my computer. That's when I uploaded the text from the Paris trip. I couldn't do photos for some reason, I'm not sure if it was the connection- but I [View Full Entry]

Day 13: Scotland- 7th day of tour- First full day of the Fringe Festival Another nice thing about being in the dorms was that we had access to a lounge area where we could all come togehter and talk. So in the morning we met and talked about the show that everyone saw the night before. We made a plan that everyone had to see at least 2 theatre performances a day and 1 performance of their choice- (music/comedy). As a group we decided to see Architecting- which was done by a group of New Yorkers. The guy from the workshop [View Full Entry]

So yeah, I’m ill’in like Bob Dillon! I’m so mad, because once the “Tattoo Flu” started going around at the beginning of the trip, I’ve been taking Air Born and drinking lots of orange juice everyday. Well, that was a lost cause. My sinuses are severely messed up and I’m running a fever and…and…and…well, I just want my Mommy!! I realized at about 4:00 yesterday that I was feeling bad and I was doing that scratchy baby pig oink sound in the back of my throat. I am doing everything I can to keep other people from getting sick and [View Full Entry]

I had ice cream today for the first time since I've been here, and it was truly magical! I had a McFlurry from McDonalds. It's strange, because all of their flavors were based on Cadberry chocolate, since that's their main chocolate supplier here. It was strange for there not to be M&M's, Butterfinger, or Oreo McFlurries. Instead there were Dairy Milks, Crispies, Smarties (which are basically M&Ms) and Wispas, which is what I tried. So Tasty! We had a discussion about the foods we miss the most, and I think the main conscensus among the group is Sweet Tea and Taco [View Full Entry]

This morning I finally departed TASIS, summer number four. I decided to rent a car and drive to Edinburgh, Scotland. Although I knew it was a 7 hour drive, I did not know that I would see about 1000 sheep (and I am NOT exaggerating!!!) nor did I know I would be driving a stick shift Shodar (a kind of car which I named Shroeder from the Peanuts) on a two way road in the back hills of Scotland, behind a John Deer tractor. The views were amazing! The impending storm was like something out of a painting. The clouds were [View Full Entry]

Once again, this photo was used without any consent!
So the BBC finished filming tonight. The cameraman was right in my face once again! If I don't make it onto the DVD, something is wrong, haha! I'm really interested to see the DVD, but we don't get them until November. Now that the filming is over, I feel like we can relax a little bit, but not too much. There was a shindig thrown by the royal marines tonight after the performance. Mr. B told us that only 28 people could go due to transportation reasons and that he would go by seniority. I of course have the most seniority [View Full Entry]

This photo was used with absolutely no consent from Mr. B! Don't kill me!
Tonight's performance I believe will be my most memorable of any of the performances. Remember the girl I told you about who's dad was just diagnosed with lieukemia? She found out he isn't doing so well, so Mr. B insisted that she go home, and he had all her arrangements made in about 3 hours this morning. In fact, she should be arriving in Chicago tomorrow afternoon. She felt so guilty for leaving us, and we just kept saying things like "It's no problem, if it were my dad, I'd be doing the exact same thing." Mr. B gave us a [View Full Entry]

Tag 72: Auchtermuchty - Edinburgh, 67.35 km, Fahrzeit 4:38, Durcchschn.
