A Palace in Edinburgh
After landing in Edinburgh on Friday, I took Aunty M and Donna on a short walk around Edinburgh, staying mostly around Princes Street and the Royal Mile but also taking them to see parts of the University. After dinner, we parted ways: I went back to my dorm to unpack and sleep and they went back to their hotel.
Palace of the Holyroodhouse We met up again on Sunday at the Palace so that they could see a few of the sights around Edinburgh before leaving the next day. First, we decided to go to the Palace (thus, the reason we were meeting there). This was the first time that I had been there too, though it had long been on my list of places to go. The Palace, now the Queen's official residence in Scotland, started as a monastery in 1128. It has housed many of Scotland's monarchs, including Mary, Queen of Scots, who lived there from 1561 to 1567.
I was amazed with the inside of the Palace. It as very elaborate and very nice. We walked around several of the rooms, including some of the more historical parts where Mary,
Queen of Scots had lived. After viewing the interior of the palace, we went out to the gardens (which were beautiful and overlooked parts of Holyrood Park, so that we could see the Crags. It was a wonderful view). Just outside of the Palace is the Holyrood Abbey, which we also walked around. It was the part that had been founded in 1128 by King David I and now is mostly ruins.
Palace of the Holyroodhouse Finishing off the Day After visiting the Palace of the Holyroodhouse, we walked up the Royal Mile, looking at the shops along the way, to the castle. After a short visit, including viewing the Scottish Honours, we went back to their hotel to drop things off and rest for a bit before dinner.
