Friday May 23rd Woke up and thought it would be best to go to the site of the battle of Culloden. Then Loch Ness. Left early. Got to Culloden just after 9am. According to a Great Aunt I am related to Bonnie Prince Charlie, (along with many, many others). It was a fantastic new interpretation centre and brought the battle to life. It was fascinating to see coins and medallions minted as propaganda for the cause from 1720-1760. We saw a sporren from an Atholl man and buttons and buckles from the battle site. Monday November 20, 2006 - Today Steve and I drove to Culloden after he made breakfast. This boy is domestic! Last year I read a series of book that took place in Scotland, in the Highlands, that my friend Kari gave me to borrow. I absolutely fell in love with the books and the characters, gave them to my friend Lynn for Christmas, and ever since we have been wanting to go to Scotland. This area of Fort George faces the Moray Firth.
On our 11th day, we toured Fort George which was built between 1748 and 1769 because of the Battle of Culloden. It is built on a peninsula that goes out in the Moray Firth and is almost a mile around. It is still used as an Army Barracks and the men did not talk to civilians, unless spoken to first. Pictures were allowed and our belongings weren't checked. Besides the barracks, there was also a chapel, interior ditches, brewhouse, provision stores, Grand Magazine used for gunpowder barrels, and a multi level Regimental Museum of the Queen's own Highlanders.
