Friday May 23rd
Woke up and thought it would be best to go to the site of the battle of Culloden. Then Loch Ness. Left early. Got to Culloden just after 9am. According to a Great Aunt I am related to Bonnie Prince Charlie, (along with many, many others). It was a fantastic new interpretation centre and brought the battle to life. It was fascinating to see coins and medallions minted
as propaganda for the cause from 1720-1760. We saw a sporren from an Atholl man and buttons and buckles from the battle site. Also mortar fragments, gunshot and pellets, broken swords, knives and muskets. A very moving tale. The MacDonalds were right across the front line, as were the Smiths and MacCormacks. No Austins though Martin!
I later read a tale in the history book where the MacDonalds claim to have won every battle where they were placed to the right of the charging army. They were not in this position at Culloden and say this is one reason for the loss. Well, who knows.
More info on the MacDonalds. We do not like the Campbells. Arch enemies. I know why!
We walked around the battle site and saw the
tombstones of fallen soldiers- mostly Scots.
Off to Loch Ness for a wee sighting of Nessie. I saw her trail in the water, will include photographic evidece as best I can. Back to camp by 4pm to beat the Bank Holiday crowd. Bank holiday is a big deal here. Now the place is busy. But we still have our fabulous view.
Maybe Beinn MacDuibh again tomorrow.
