Braemar gathering or the biggest highland games in Scotland, the one were the Queen goes! We kind of planned our Scottish holiday around that date. I absolutely wanted to take Alex to a Highland game and this one is the best. Plus we were so lucky with the weather that we almost got sun burned! On our way from the Isle of Skye to Braemar, we stopped to visit Urquhart castle on the bank of Loch Ness. I like to visit this castle, especially on a sunny day. The visit starts with a short video explaining the history of the castle and of this part of Scotland. Visitors should definitely watch that video before visiting the castle ground. It has a little surprise at the end and I am not going to spoil it since it ... read more

Before I start writing about this little part of the journey, I remembered something that happened at Kielder hostel that I didn't include earlier. The short of it is the other fellow that I shared my hostel room with (and who I hadn't seen the night before since he was asleep in bed at 8.30pm !!) - I was sure, when I happened to open my eyes in the half dark at 2am, that he was sat bolt upright at the foot of his bed !! This was quite disconcerting since I couldn't work out why he would do this and at that time of the morning all sorts of morbid thoughts race through your head. I tried to stay awake as long as I could but must have fallen asleep and when I woke up ... read more

The springs of the bed at the Youth Hostel in Braemar came up to our expectations and we both had a much better sleep than our last hostel experience at Glencoe. We were wise and had a lie in and let the crowd of walkers get their showering done and cook or prepare their breakfast before we emerged for the day. The showers were actually very good with lots of hot water and pressure. The only thing we both still have to work out is how to keep the floor of the outer side of the shower cubicle free of water so you can dry yourself without fear of dropping your clothes and getting them wet. By the time we got to the kitchen we had the place almost to ourselves. The guy who manages the ... read more

We promised ourselves a bit of a lie in this morning when we went to bed last night after a big day out and we managed to achieve that not waking until around 7.30am.Well it was Sunday and we didn’t have a big distance to cover today as we returned to the Highlands and a couple of nights at another Youth Hostel, this time in Braemar. Yes, we can hear you saying, ‘but we thought you had had enough of youth hostels after your experience at Glencoe’!! Well yes, but on that occasion we had had a long day, were tired and the atmosphere of the place had also not helped. Photos we had seen on the booking.com website indicated that the beds looked more comfortable than the ones at Glencoe so we have our fingers ... read more

A few weeks ago, I was talking to some of my friends (one of whom is Scottish) and telling them how excited I was to be going to Scotland to see the Highland Games. I told them that I had always wanted to see the men “throw the big stick”. “What are you on about, mate?” “You know, that thing where they throw that stick that looks like a telephone pole.” “For the love of God, Bohner. It’s called tossing the caber. Please promise us that you’ll get the terminology right before you turn up.” I promised that I wouldn’t embarrass them. Up with the birds as I did not want to miss a minute, I had to stop for petrol. I went into a town called Ballater, the next one over from my hotel. What ... read more

Scotland is the big and the small, the vast open spaces and thin cracks, the wind and the rain, the sun and the clouds. No matter where you are taken, you find depth, whether in the textures of clouds or faces of people and mountains. Scotland is wide for all to see and experience. Nature is busy up there, wearing down mountains--whipping them with wind and rain. Ancient forests are gone, greenery is owned by sheep and red deer, glacial puddles rest until they are frozen again, taken elsewhere by the ever-changing world. This land has seen it all. I stood upon billions of years old rock. Scotland, before our time, was near the Antarctic. This land has seen it all: glaciers, desert rainforest, and grassland. Today it makes its approach to the other pole. There ... read more

It was another exciting week here in Scotland. I’m adjusting to the nuances of the Scottish education system and was more comfortable this week than the last. At this point I think that’s all you can ask for. We had a “Meet the Teacher” night this week and I had the opportunity to meet some of the parents. On Friday I was excused from school to attend a meeting in Edinburgh with all the other exchange teachers in the country. These were not just Fulbright exchanges, but other exchange organizations as well. It was nice to be with a group of people who are in the same boat as me and share experiences. Friday night we went to dinner with two other couples that Elizabeth has been spending time with. We had a great time and ... read more
