St. Mary's Island
A memento of home in Whitley Bay, before setting off.
Before setting off on our travels down under, we thought it appropriate to post a picture of us in front of St. Mary’s Island, which is the Icon for Whitley Bay.It will give us something to look forward to returning to after our travels.
St Mary’s is a part time Island reached by a causeway at low tide. It has an intriguing history that includes the early Christian chapel of St Hilda (1090), a burial ground, a smugglers haunt, a cholera isolation island, a pub and finally a lighthouse. Today it houses a visitor’s centre and the area surrounding it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Voluntary Marine Reserve. The whole local coastline is worth a visit if you are on Tyneside.
But on to our proposed journey:
As an aged scout leader of the 9
th Whitley Bay Scout Group, I have not given up the adventurous spirit in me just yet, and my wife and I plan to travel as backpackers down to Western Australia, drive across the Nullarbor desert to Adelaide in South Australia, fly to New Zealand and travel around both North and South Islands.

Are we crazy? We will reserve judgement until we return.
