Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Well helloooo everybody!! This is our first entry... so don't expect much! What a mad day we had yesterday!! Completion day (suposedly at least!) and come 2.30pm we hadn't heard from our solicitors yet. To say we were a bit twitchy is a bit of an understatement.... After a few phone calls it became obvious the money was not going to come through from the bottom of the chain, so panic started to set in. Not as bad for us as it must have been for our buyers - they had a truck full of plants (no exaggerating, we mea [View Full Entry]

The White Cliffs of Dover …a symbol of home for so many British soldiers who fought to protect England’s freedom during WWII. Today, July 10 2005 was Veterans day …a time to remember the sacrifices of the brave men and women of WWII. In the face of terrorist’s atrocities, the patriotic British rose above their fears today to come in vast numbers and honor the sacrifices of their veterans. A fitting tribute! On July 7th we were on our way to London from Paris when we heard on the car radio of the tragic bombings. We boarded the ferry to cross [View Full Entry]

There are hedges everywhere here! The farmers hire people to trim them or they can apply for a grant for the government to take care of the trimming. They do a lot here to be ecologically friendly a... [more]
It had to happen sometime and today was the day. We had kind of planned to have a bit of downtime today since I'm headed all over London tomorrow so we were going to take a walk around the countryside, go see Helen's grandparents, and go eat Indian food. Nothing too strenuous. When I woke up this morning, it was a moqtly grey day with some mist hanging in the air. By about 1100, it was still about the same weather outside so we decided to go on our walk since it didn't look like the weather was going to get [View Full Entry]

Helen and I decided to go to the city centre of Leeds today. We drove to Bentley (another suburb of Doncaster that is a bit southwest of Barnby Dun) so that we could have somewhere to park and somewhere free to park for the day. Bentley is a "pit town." They used to do a lot of coal mining until the industry took a bit of a nose dive. We got on the 11:29 train to Leeds and arrived at 12:13. The station in Bentley was not manned so we bought our tickets after we boarded the train. The train station [View Full Entry]

Great pizza! And Kelly, they had meat on a spit that they shaved. I almost brought you some since I know you love it! ;-)
Today I was able to go to school with Helen. She teaches year 6 and her kids were great. They asked me all sorts of questions. We talked about movies, music, and money. They were quite surprised that I hadn't ACTUALLY met the president in person. That was my afternoon mostly. The morning was spent in the Speech and Language Unit with the teacher-Ken, the TA-Angie, and the 8 (!) children that were in the class. One of them was using his computerized communication board to tell me knock knock jokes. Hilarious! I was able to speak to the SLP who [View Full Entry]

I love shopping here! So many new products, so little time to figure out what they all are. I have been introduced to Squash which is a syrup-y liquid to which you add water to make a sort of Koolaid drink. I completely want to go shopping again. If I move here, I can see that my average time for a shopping trip is going to greatly increase! [View Full Entry]

Leeds & Skipton I just got back a bit ago by train from the Leeds and Skipton area. Yesterday Casey and I took a train to Leeds, which was about an hour away from Sheffield. We met two of Caseys friends for lunch and walked around a while and did a little shopping. Later in the afternoon we took another train to Keighley where both of Casey's grandparents live. We visited with them for awhile...it was really hard for me to understand his grandparents. After spending 1 1/2 hours there we went to the village where Casey's parents live which [View Full Entry]
