Helen and I decided to go to the city centre of Leeds today. We drove to Bentley (another suburb of Doncaster that is a bit southwest of Barnby Dun) so that we could have somewhere to park and somewhere
free to park for the day. Bentley is a "pit town." They used to do a lot of coal mining until the industry took a bit of a nose dive. We got on the 11:29 train to Leeds and arrived at 12:13. The station in Bentley was not manned so we bought our tickets after we boarded the train.
The train station for Leeds is very close (if not actually in) the city centre. We had a very short walk and then went to Harvey Nichols. I've never been anywhere that sold real Prada, etc. so it was very cool just to look around. I didn't come home with anything designer in case you were wondering. :-D
If the city centre is any indication, Leeds is a decently large city. The figures I was able to find online say that it has a population of about 370000, but I'm pretty sure that includes the suburbs and isn't just Leeds Proper.

Leeds Shopping Centre
We didn't even make it into the "mall" that was in the city centre. There was so much else to see and take it.
I was very surprised by the sheer numbers of people walking about in the middle of a Monday. Granted, it was school holidays, but still, there seemed to be a lot of business/professional people around as well.
After we walked around and shopped, we ended up going to the Corn Exchange. The building is no longer a corn market, but has been renovated and filled with small shops. We had lunch there and then headed back to catch the train home. Relatively uneventful and low-key, but I liked the city overall. I think I could live there quite comfortably!
Also, I must say that I enjoy train travel. It's very easy and in the whole of my time in England, all the trains and underground trains I took were right on time with no problems. I'm sure that's not the case all the time, but for me, everything worked like clockwork. It was nice to be able to get on the train and not worry about driving and if I wanted to I could read a book, or nap, or just look out the window or people watch. I wish we had a more developed train system in

Harvey Nichols
This is the only Harvey Nichols outside of London and Allders. Harvey Nick's, as it's often referred, was Princess Diana's favorite store.
the States. It'd make my journey's back and forth to Ohio much easier!

Trains
Don't get used to the trains being on time! The railway system is the butt of many national jokes! - Andy (Donna's hubby)
