A long road surrounded by huge trees seperates the semetary from the nearby town.
Brookwood Military Cemetery was originally established during WWI as a place to bury those who died from war wounds in hospitals in the London area. Being on a military trip we decided to incorporate it into our visits list, and I'm glad we did. The cemetery is very big...there are service personal from numerous nations burried there. Despite it's location near Brookwood, the grounds are quite tranquil. The landscaping alone would be worth the visit. Everything is so well kept. We only had fourty minutes to walk around, and I was not able to graze far from the Canadian graves. I intend to go back on my own before the trip is up to see the rest.

It was a moving experience to be at this cemetery. I've been told it is the biggest military cemetery in Europe...aside from the mass graves.

"This memorial bears the names of three thousand five hundred men and women of the forces of the British Commonwealth and Empire who gave their lives in their own country and in many foreign lands in home and distant waters in the campaign of 1940 in Norway and in later raids on the coasts of Europe and to whom the fortune of war denied a known and honored grave"

Restful
I visited Brookwood Memorial Cemetery Sep,2008 to see the final resting place of a cousin. Such a beautiful place and so well kept. If all these Canadians had to die at least they have a peaceful place to rest. Betty Cutler
