We visited Winkworth Arboretum near Godalming in Surrey last autumn. We found lovely pictures of spring displays in the Boat House – these photos encouraged us to come back to this arboretum in spring time. The weather forecast of 20th May was sunshine/showers – a typical English weather. We had lunch on the train. Upon arrival at Winkworth Arboretum, we saw trees with green leaves – it was very different from the last time. Mark carried a map and navigated the route. First, we decided to walk down to the lake. As we walked down, colourful rhododendrons and azaleas and lush foliage came into our sight. We also noted myriads of wildflowers on foot. We popped in the boathouse and walked along the lake. We followed the footpath on the Rowe’s Flashe Meadow. There were myriads ... read more

We have completed a circle and are now back on our second home, the place where we met, lived for many years and where Ella was born. Even though I really liked being in Spain and closer to my family, I am very happy to be back here, as I feel like I developed as a person here and it's the place where my real life happened. We've been here for over a year now and have been busy adapting to living here again, although it kind of feels as if we never left, and getting Ella used to be here as, even though she was born here, she was only three weeks old when we moved to Spain. Being the list-nerd that I am, I have made one with all the things and places I ... read more

We visited Winkworth Arboretum, Surrey in 2003. Our lovely memory brought us back there in 2016. We got up at 7 o’clock on 19 November, and took the train from Waterloo to Godalming. I remembered the town centre and the market hall where the market was held on Saturday morning. From the town centre we took the bus to Winkworth Arboretum. At the reception, we showed our membership cards. We were asked if we had been there before. We said, ‘Yes, but in 2003.’ The receptionist told us that there had been a lot of changes and extension of the course over the last few years. She showed us the map and recommended that we would do the 3.6km course, challenging route, so that we would see all the attractions. For being good at following the ... read more

A hillside arboretum, situated south of Godalming, Surrey, contains more than 1,000 different shrubs and tress including rare foreign oriented species. The arboretum is managed by the National Trust and opens all year and offers peace and tranquillity throughout the year. In early spring, snowdrops and daffodils spread the carpet on the foot of the tall trees. As it gets warmer, the old English bluebells display a stunning blue carpet in the woodlands, together with magnolias, azaleas, and cherry blossoms. In summer, it is an ideal place for family days out and picnics. The lake is the centre of the arboretum, which can be accessible via the footpath. The arboretum is surrounded by an abundance of nature, and is home to a wide variety of animals, birds, and waterfowl. There are articles and pictures of the ... read more

Hi folks, Well I'm one month into a possible one year carreer break. I didn't realise there would be so much time taken up preparing for such an adventure. I always had this romantic idea that I would turn up at Gatwick airport and then decide where I was going, but you need visas and money and apex tickets, etc.. anyway at least I've decided where I'm going. I'm off to Miami first. It's around 78 degrees there and the best time to visit is the winter. I spent all last Monday in the US embassy trying to get a multi visit visa, which is what I need. 5 hours and three interviews later is seems that they will let go to the US and spend some money afterall! Very nice of them to let me ... read more

Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 January 2008 - We were so excited to know that the weather forecast for this weekend was going to be very good - bright skies and mild temperatures. The whole weekend, especially on Sunday, the skies were blue, the sun shining very brightly and full of warmth, and the birds were happily cheerping away. Due to Lavinia's pending operation on Monday 28 January, we were very keen to find two strenuous walks (yes, we are crazy), because we knew that following the operation, Lavinia will be out of 'hiking action' for at least 6 weeks. Lavinia thought it would be lovely for Steve to be able to spend a weekend reminiscing on happier childhood memories, and so we headed back to the area where he grew up in and around Guildford ... read more
