The Easter Bank Holiday weekend saw us blessed with fine weather, and the even finer offer from Mr Matich for us to come up and visit him at his new digs up in Sheffield. The Sheffield convention for not putting any street names up hampered my car’s efforts to find Adam’s house, but the Sat Nav in the other motor proved infuriatingly accurate!! All assembled, we were bowled over by the quality of Adam’s pad. Decking seemed to stretch as far as the eye could see and it looked like it would be perfect for some prime sun-bathing and barbecueing!! Top work Mr Match!! After catching up on the sun-deck over a few tinnies, we headed out for a top curry. For us southerners, the prices seemed music to our ears, as many beers, starters, ... read more

South Yorkshire Motorcycle Egg Run in aid of Sheffield children’s Hospital The Egg Run started in 2000 to raise enough money to buy 300 chocolate Easter eggs for Sheffield Children’s Hospital, with the help of South Yorkshire Police Motorcycle section, and a few other motorcycle clubs in the area, this has now grown into an annual event with around 200 motorcycles taking part each year The South Yorkshire Motorcycle Egg Run in aid of Sheffield Children’s Hospital took place with the motorcade of 200 motorcycles departing from the police operation centre, (wait for it) Letsby Avenue (believe me, try it in your Sat Nav!!!), Catcliffe, Sheffield at 10am. This was the 8th Egg Run on behalf of the Sheffield Children’s hospital but the first time I’d been part of it. Having walked the dog, I left ... read more

to quote the Mighty Boosh (drug induced BritCom). Well, a week break came just in time! I spent the first few days (the weekend) getting some work together for my literature class and battling French bureaucracy. I have a small victory to report: I got my medical exam rescheduled! This means there is a CHANCE I may get my titre de sejour (which allows me to stay... you'd think they'd have gotten around to it sooner as my visa expired at the end of November...) before April rent which means I can finally get the government subsidy for my rent (a nice 90E a month). SO keep your fingers crossed this is not my last victory. I actually got a prompt phone call after I emailed them, but then I tried to return the call and ... read more

The Decision has been taken, tickets bought and parents told - that Angel and I are finally fulfilling our dream of seeing a bit more of the World. How exciting! It is planned to leave on the 23rd January 2007, for 5 1/2 months, starting in Australia, followed by New Zealand in a caravan, Thailand by foot and finally China, returning to Germany on the 16th July 2007. Preparations are running wild, injections are given, e-bay bidding for backpacks, mosquito nets, travel towals etc., the search continues to find tenants for our flat and worries start to make their way into our thoughts: what if we do the wrong thing, what is afterwards? One thing we know for sure, it will be an adventure that we can tell our kids (however small they might be), a ... read more

The family descended on England for Christmas this year. There were 19 of us filling a youth hostel rented out in Hathersage, not far from Sheffield (a nice hostel with a huge kitchen and lots of nearby walks if you're looking for one). A lovely little town-the churchyard up on the hill is home to Little John's grave which was really cool to see. Some incredible views and then of course the typical rolling hills covered in sheep, cows, horses, ancient stone walls covered in moss and a creek (river?) winding its way through. An excellent time was had by all with lots and lots of good cooking (which of course means good eating) wonderful walks, lots of singing, decorating, and then more eating alongside stories and games and of course lots of tea!!... read more

Back here in Blighty and surfing between couches. Slept on three different ones the last three nights. So it's time to find a bed to call my own. Up this morning at 6am to go to the Labour Ready agency. Had to fill out forms and bring in documentation and sit a test. Got 100% in the test so I think I might be accepted into the labour ready community. The other employables who were registering this morning inexplicably failed to get all the answers correct, there is a very real chance that I may be working with fools. Those who turned up for work who were already registered were being sent to Asda and required black trousers for this highly respectable employer. That's another drain on my rapidly dissipating funds, I need to buy trousers ... read more

Even after being back for five months we're still experiencing elements of Einstein's relativism - spacepeople who have travelled very fast and returned to find time has moved faster at the place they left than with themselves - and it's not just all the weddings. When people talk about last year we both immediately think of events in 2004 - for us 2005 and early 2006 just didn't seem to exist. Nonetheless whilst things changed most people have remained reassuringly the same. The Arctic Monkeys happened whilst we were away, and now I've finally got the album I quite like them - sorry Ken. Their Fake Tales of San Francisco seems particularly appropriate to my current career, sitting in my attic a couple of hundred yards from Hunters Bar communicatin... read more

Yes, tomorrow I take to the wing again to fly to Munich, Germany to meet up with Lisa (see the Romanian entries..). Not sure what's going to happen out there, I have a flight back on the 4th November (in time for Bonfire Night), but if I can manage to get jobs I may stay on the road a few months and work my way back overland. This time I PROMISE to write and not neglect my duties to those readers who said they enjoyed my blog. It's a grey day here in Sheffield and hopefully not as bleak and cold and drizzly out there in Bavaria. And if any readers out there in Germany or France or someplace nearby want a hired hand get in touch! RAB ... read more

Sheer laziness is what brought me to send Suresh a text yesterday, asking to have dinner at his house. Laziness, and to be honest, a desire to ensure I had a satisfying meal. Really, it's not that hard to defrost some meat and cook it at a reasonable time, even if one does finish at 5pm (and I could've texted my housemates asking them to take care of it for me...). But he's just such a damn good cook. Those were some really nice meatballs, and the pasta sauce was excellent. Yong Chen's fish soup was also a treat. Besides, practical things and a love of well-made food aside, I guess I just take any excuse to see him (Suresh, that is). The excursion to the pub afterwards was nice as well - the Hallamshire House, ... read more
