If, when you go to bed, there is a snow storm blowing outside, then, surely when you wake, the first thing you do is run to the window to check the first winter snow is still there. And surely your second thought would be to get dressed and go out walking in it. I wake at 6am and can tell by the total still sound that outside is covered in snow. quite deep snow. I make a flask, pack the last leftover roast sausages and stuffing from the Christmas dinner, layer up with clothes and set off for the moors. At 7am, there is no one on the streets but me. No cars, no buses, no one. Frozen car tracks left during the night, leave deep ruts in the roads covered in snow. I walk in ... read more

A day in Sheffield, where I caught the tram into the main city and out to the Hillsborough stadium, to pay my respects to the 96 who died in the football tragedy 25 years ago in the FA cup semi final, between Liverpool and Nottingham Forrest. It was touching, reading and seeing all those scarves, the pictures and the messages from loved ones. You cannot even fathom what they are feeling, and with the ongoing events, I just hope that closure will come to them in the close future. From there back into the city, where I find myself in the Fargate mall. Wow, my first sign that Christmas is not far away, with stalls and Santa's grotto in the midst of it all. I wandered up and down and also visited the Peace Gardens, which ... read more

There are certain songs that make you smile and sing along to. Donna Summers Hot Stuff is one of these . Go on you know you want to sing along....................Sittin' here, eatin' my heart out, Waitin' for some lover to call, Dialled about a thousand numbers lately, Almost rang the phone off the wall . .....Lookin' for some hot stuff baby this evenin'. I need some hot stuff baby tonight I want some hot stuff baby this evenin' ........Catchy isn't it. And when you put it together with that iconic scene of grown men standing in a jobcentre queue waiting to sign on and breaking into dance it cannot fail to make you smile. Having worked in the jobcentre for over 30 years I am still waiting for that scene to be reinacted in my office. ... read more

Foggy, dismal and pretty depressing in Sheffield at this time of year, when the sun doesn't shine! But all is OK as I am going to AFRICA within a week. I AM GOING ON HOLIDAY BY MYSELF, ALONE, WITH NO-ONE GOING WITH ME! I will hopefully meet up with like minded travellers. I am all inoculated up - everything is up to date; typhoid, tetanus, polio, all the hepatitis, diphtheria, polio, didn't need yellow fever, and my malaria tablets start on Wednesday! I have 3 initial challenges 1st how much I can get in to my smallest rucksack; this is because I get notoriously bored waiting for baggage at any airport so always try to fly light! 2nd is accepting my small rucksack is not big enough! 3rd packing; I normally do this around 40 minutes ... read more

in the shifting light of the last year, i have watched my home respond to the seasons. it battened down the hatches in the deep winter and then opened its doors and windows and tiny corners of darkness to a summer England hasn’t seen the likes of in years. and now, that the rain has returned and the dark nights are drawing in, my wood pile and i are ready for the fast approaching cold. this house encourages me to live by the seasons. it can be very cold at times, it can be bathed in sunshine or feel damp with rain. but mostly, and this is what i mark time by, the sun writes across the walls and i can read the seasons by its trail. if i turn around, i can read what time ... read more

Hi Everyone At last I can sit down and write something, We had a wonderful time with our Kiwi friends in Sydney, catching up and having some laughs. Next morning we got a shuttle to Airport and we arrived in Seoul about 6pm,Couldnt fault Korean air they were fantastic, nothing is to much trouble,we were given slippers to put on our feet and fed us all the way, going through customs at INcheon airposerious a very serious affair. We were taken by coach to a 5star hotel 30mins away, took longer as the traffic was busy and were given complimentary dinner and breakfast vouchers for our stay, after dinner we went for a walk to sus out the area, and went to A China town which was close by.Next day we were on our way again I must admit I was very ... read more

We going to live for a very long time………….. Glen Gregory’s vocals resonate around the 02 Academy in Sheffield. 28 years on, they are back on the road in their home town. It was Penthouse & Pavement 18 months ago. It’s the Luxury Gap tour this time, with a bit of Penthouse & Pavement and early Human League thrown in for good measure. Being Boiled indeed - actually that was earlier in the week at The Roundhouse. The centre of Sheffield still sees Heaven 17 a bit overshadowed by the Human League, 32 years after the split with Phil Oakey. The Park Hill flats still tower over the approaches from Junction 33 of the M1. They have a bit more colour these days with some decorative panels on the front, but are now adorned with the ... read more

Well. Got up on Friday morning (morning may be a little optimistic!), looking forward to a drive down through Inverness, Perth, Glasgow and stopping off at or near Hadrian's Wall for the night. The best laid plans... Got up at around 9.30am, made coffee etc., took the dogs for a walk, then remembered to check the oil. It was fine (engine oil, brake fluid, water for windscreen). Then hit the road. Whilst travelling the last 15-20 miles to Perth City, Scotland, we smelt a little 'gas' leak. Got out and checked our gas bottles. All fine. Got back in and drove further. 2 kilometres out of Perth, on a roundabout, started getting smoke coming out from under the van. Travelled a little way (mainly left turns), got into some industrial area, parked outside Dulux Paints and ... read more
