Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

So this morning was pretty mellow, until someone was cooking in one of the downstairs flats and set the fire alarm off.....for 15 minutes!!! Granted we are the last flat in a back corner and it takes a few minutes for people from reception to get to us and shut it off. Silly boys....they left their kitchen door open while they were cooking. Our smoke detectors are in the middle of the flat (in the hallway) so if you shut the kitchen door then the fire alarm shouldn't go off. Although apparently some people smoke cigarettes in their room, which they're [View Full Entry]

Last night was fantastic! It was a lot of fun but I'm pretty much partied out. I might go to the last event of the week, but we'll see. It's utter craziness to go out every night of the week....it puts one big dent in your wallet. Sheesh! Anyways, this morning I waited around to see if Ruth and Jana were going to go shopping in the city centre. It would have been fun to go with them, if they actually did go, but by noon I wouldn't have made it. So I hung out a bit with my flatmates. Then [View Full Entry]

Since I absolutely must do laundry, mainly because visiting clubs and pubs and such are all smokey that my clothes smell absolutely disgusting, I am in the process of completing this task. And in scoping out the laundry situation, which is pretty cool since it's out the door and 2 steps to the left, the cost of laundry is amazing. At Santa Cruz laundry is $1.25 to wash and $.75 to dry. Well, here it's 1.60 quid and 60p, respectively. So double it and that's what it would be in the US, approximately. Ahh! Well since I don't really have a [View Full Entry]

So, last night I went to Ocean for Funked Up @Ocean which was really fun. I met up with a bunch of friends (ie John, Ruth, Steph, Kiera, and Becky) and I met a few new freshers at the bar before hand. It was really really fun. They had a live band and a pretty good DJ playing. The band was "Invaders from Planet Funk" and they mostly covered other songs but they were really good for what they did, I thought. It was thus a very late night but that's ok because I slept in until about 11:30am which I'm [View Full Entry]

So this morning I walked over to Freshers' Fayre at the Sports Centre. It was set up in a huge marquee....they easily fit 300 stalls in it!! So I explored and walked up and down all the aisles. Let me tell you, it is the hot spot for free stuff. They hand out free stuff left and right whether you need it or not. I walked away with about 4 bags full of stuff. There are over 300 clubs and societies and when they told me that I was wowed, but once you actually see that they truly exist it's insane! [View Full Entry]

So today I went grocery shopping and finally got some food. Yes! And I got hangers for a few of my clothes, etc. Beeston's about a 10-15 min walk from here which isn't bad except when it rains and you have lots of heavy bags to carry back...which was our problem on the way back. Emily was nice enough to let me go with her and her friends, Becks and Sweyun (I probably totally butchered her name). Now I have a better idea of what the shopping area and things are going to entail. I think next time I'm going to [View Full Entry]

So today I moved myself into my fairly large room. For those of you at UCSC, it's about as big as a double in the dorms. I really like it though because it's the corner room and it has 2 windows with lots of greenery around. The window latches are pretty strange but they work well especially since I can't figure out how to turn both radiators off. I had to stand in a fairly long line to try and sort out my housing in the morning so that I could collect my keys....until Mom came to the rescue and called [View Full Entry]

I have gotten up way too early today so that I could shower off last night’s fun. The club was awesome and it’s HUGE. There had to have been about 300-400 people there last night dancing the night away. They played really good music—a lot of mixes from the USA and some European stuff. In total I had a blast, apart from the inhalation of smoke from both cigarettes and machines. I had to have fun to partially lose my hearing because the music was so loud. (Kris you would have had a fabulous time and I doubt you would have [View Full Entry]

Today we got up again and were fed a pretty boring meal. It seems like breakfast is going to be horrible here, so it’s a good thing that I’m feeding myself. At least today we had some porridge or oatmeal which wasn’t too bad. However, if you are one of those people that don’t like breakfast, you’d probably do just fine in England because the fare is pretty bad. After breakfast I headed over to try and get on the internet. I got there a quarter till when it would open and waited in a huge queue until half past when [View Full Entry]

Today they fed us breakfast which wasn’t the greatest, especially since no fruit was available. We then did a whole lot. First we took a very incomplete and hard to understand/hear tour of Nottingham University Campus. It was somewhat informative if you were able to hear what the tour guides were saying. Then since we were on our own for lunch, a group of us (4 Americans, 2 Aussies, 1 Venezuelan and a Mexican) headed to the bus stop to catch a ride into the city centre. We then split up a bit and ate lunch, explored the city a bit, [View Full Entry]
