Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Today has been a glorious day. Sunny and about 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Once again a fairly normal day....thus if nothing exciting happens then you may not find a post about it. I went to class and learned more about US foreign policy during the Cold War. You have to love the US and their intervention in EVERYTHING. It was quite entertaining though when the lecturer accidentally stated that FDR was assasinated. Oh goodness. After class I headed over to the library where I subsequently spent several hours searching for books pertaining to the class reading agenda. Funtimes! At 1pm there we [View Full Entry]

So I got up late, it's really become a bad habit and pattern due to the late nights out here. It's nutty I know. So the only thing that I really did today was go to ultimate practice. Other than that nothing really exciting happened....I did some homework and stayed home hanging out. That's about it. [View Full Entry]

A very happy birthday to Leslie from UBC! She and I headed to Sains' this morning for some grub, a must. We picked up some cheesecake and had a mini celebration for her 20th birthday. The rest of the afternoon was spent talking and swapping stories with Leslie and one of her flatmates, Aylin. It was interesting to get different perspectives. Aylin is British but she basically grew up in Michigan and a bit in South Africa, so she has a fairly broad world view. After leaving to make myself some dinner, I got roped into going out to a house [View Full Entry]

Leslie and I
Party!
Craziness

After a not so thrilling Thursday evening, Friday was looking a bit better. Jana and I headed downtown for a few things, namely clothes. What else is new....we're girls. When we were downtown we got really hungry so we ate lunch at Lloyd's pub. It was an okay place although Jana wasn't so thrilled, but we really didn't have much of a choice. Either eat then or keep going with the threat of Jana keeling over....she wasn't feeling so fantastic. That night, feeling much better, Jana, Ruth, Leslie and a few others headed to Broadgate Bar. We hung out for a [View Full Entry]

On the agenda for today: -attend Nottingham: Making of a Provincial City report: an interesting class, although the students are basically going to teach the entire class which is normal, I guess, except that the prof isn't going to lecture on anything, which is quite odd. We do however get to take a walking tour of the buildings in Nottingham with the prof who was originally scheduled to teach the class. -ultimate frisbee practice indoors report: this was my first indoor frisbee practice ever which was really cool and interesting. The game is pretty much the same with a few min [View Full Entry]

After party

Another day of class although this time a bit more interesting. The topic for today's lecture was "The Cold War in East Asia" and basically consisted of US-Japan relations and their effect within the Cold War and East Asia in particular. It was pretty interesting, besides the fact that the class seems to be almost in the level 1 realm but not quite. Their levels here confuse me and sometimes I feel like I'm in the wrong class, but hopefully I'll be able to figure everything out and be just fine. At the very least I'm not alone in the confusion, [View Full Entry]

Today didn't see very many exciting or noteworthy topics of discussion. I headed off to class for 12 hoping to be done before 1 but ended up having a full 2 hour introductory lecture. It was at least beneficial and interesting....I need to sit in teh front from now on because the lecturer is hard to hear in the middle much less the back. It could also be because the room we were in is split in two with us using only one half. It's weird. We picked seminar groups and I really like the topic of ours so that's a [View Full Entry]

Off to class I went this morning about 9:30am to the Law & Soc Sci building for Contemporary World since 1945. The room was very interesting. It had rows of chairs that folded up but shared a table, kind of like a law room. No slouching here! Our convenors introduced what this module was going to be about and handed out a 30 page syllabus with 6 pages devoted to a reading list. Yikes! And no particular text book for the course. Plus, they don't expect us to attend every lecture but only the ones that we'd like to learn more [View Full Entry]

Sunday....what a bum around day. I went down to Nottingham city centre with Ruth, Jana, and Alex. It was a pretty good trip. I really like hanging out with Jana and Ruth. They're really down to earth and fun to be around. Plus Jana has been my dance partner had the clubs which I totally appreciate. In the city centre we were on the lookout for a few things: I needed to get a mobile phone so that I can communicate with everyone and Ruth needed a wok and a white t-shirt plus supplies for her architecture class on Monday. Alex [View Full Entry]

Laundry: not something I want to do but I don't have a choice.....thus I finally have finished my laundry. And in waiting for my clothes to become clean, I researched places I'd like to visit on the weekend or so. Paris and Wales look really nice, not to mention St. Andrews to visit Rachel. Now I just need to find a travel partner who is able to travel on a budget but who's also willing to just go. Ruth showed me a great travel site too--lastminute.com--which looks really good. Other than that I've been looking at STA travel which is pretty [View Full Entry]
