Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Quote to ponder: 'I'm tired of chasing my dreams. I'm just gonna ask where they are going, and hook up with them later.'--quote from Tristan Today is just craziness and coming off of Wednesday night 9am classes are the absolute worst. However, today's student lecture was really really good which is kinda scary but I have a long time to work on it, so that's a plus. After lecture I went to the student union to get some more paper, too much notetaking here!, and then headed to the library. I had to read a bit more about Saint's Cults before [View Full Entry]

What to say about Wednesday..... I had a non-US foreign policy class this morning which was nice. Today's contemporary lecture was on communist world systems starting with the Soviet Union, of course. It was a really interesting lecture, more cultural history than data or political/social history--I think I fit in the cultural history framework better than the political, although social isn't too bad. Lecture was the only real thing that occurred in the morning. After lecture I went home to eat lunch, quickly, before frisbee practice at 2pm. Practice today was good although there are some [View Full Entry]

pre-Works Hanging Out

Tuesday brings a late class about Anglo-Saxon England which was quite interesting but a boring topic to relate at the moment. However, I do have a presentation for that class coming up really soon!!! After class I didn't do much which usually means that I attempted homework but most likely became sidetracked. That night though, I tagged along to a U21 international social with Leslie, Judy and Taylor. I knew a large group of who was there which was pretty cool. The social mainly consisted of Australians and Canadians or those that were headed to or just returned from Australia and [View Full Entry]

Monday: ugh, another day of school....hehe. It's great to be able to study abroad in another country but Monday mornings are the same no matter what country you're in. Contemporary World--the topic of discussion today was Detente and the confusion or rather disagreement on the use and conditions of the term. Apparently the Soviets don't like to relax as much as the Americans do....but that's for another class. After class I went to the library to return books, check out more books, read, photocopy paperwork for UC registration, etc. Wow....I've never spent so much time in the library si [View Full Entry]

Well it's official....our building has set off the fire alarm 4 of the 5 times that it has gone off. It's really annoying....so learn to either shut your kitchen door or to cook-- you choose! Anyways, besides the irritation of having to stand outside because the fire alarm went off again today (someone sets it off about once per week), I'm heading to frisbee practice in a kinda sunny afternoon. It's not too cold out yet which is really nice. ps-this time one of the girls ended up outside in just a towel from her shower. isn't that nice?? and we've [View Full Entry]

Saturday: the day for chores (ie a really boring most of the day spent doing laundry, cleaning my room, and attempting to get homework done so that I don't have to do it during the week and can have some fun). Saturday night: started out very mellow. I was highly entertained by my flatmates cooking pad thai from scratch and the conversations surrounding the method of cooking. Then I headed over to Ruth's to pick up one of my dvds and a list of American products to get for the girls to try....since they don't have them here. No luck finding [View Full Entry]

The day was going to start off fine, however.....fire alarms are hateful!!! The lovely screeching sound of the fire alarm went off at 7 o'clock this morning, waking everyone up and making perfect grouches of us. Some didn't have anything to do today but sleep or didn't have class until later in the day. I was planning on getting up at 8am anyways, so this 1 hour early wake-up call was incredibly unpleasant, particularly because it was a test. So I went back to bed after it and ended up shutting my alarm off and waking up randomly 40 minutes after [View Full Entry]

So...Nott'm: Making a City in the morning for class. It was way too early for me to get up but I did anyways. It was an okay class, kinda boring but that's okay. We are going on a walking tour of Nott'm in two weeks to look at the buildings with the prof who was originally teaching the course which is exciting. He's apparently an expert on the city of Nott'm. Yes! learning from actual history, bring it on. Later on I kinda hung about and did some homework, took a nap and such in the afternoon before frisbee practice. Frisbee [View Full Entry]

Once again I sat through another hour of US history and foreign policy in the world. Today's topic: The Vietnam War and why on earth the US was involved. It was a really good lecture and actually taught me many new things. However, it did have a rather negative view of the US--the first that I've come across that made me somewhat cringe. Yet it was really good to hear someone else's opinion much less actually covering the topic in such a survey course. It's frustrating when taking classes in US history that certain topics are skipped over because they are [View Full Entry]

Class of the day: Kings, Saints, and Monsters, where I learned about the Anglo-Saxons and mainly about Bede's Ecclesiastical History. It was a pretty good class although I found that the material she was giving us wasn't as difficult as she made it out to be. This could be a good thing, I don't know. However, I will definitely still need to pay close attention. After class I headed to Jana's, which is pretty much next to my class, to finish watching The Beach. We then headed over to Broadgate, not really knowing what to do with ourselves for the rest [View Full Entry]
