Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Band Aid!
Band Aid!
Me in my oh so bright and sunshiny costume.
It definitely feels like Halloween here, especially with all the leaves on the ground and the trees turning into spooky creatures. The plans for the night are all a jumbled mess that will hopefully be sorted fairly soon. As for today, I went to class for 10am which happened to be canceled so I then proceeded to the library, which is pretty much next door. Basically I spent the entire day in the library with a quick lunch break in the middle. It was actually really good because I got in some last minute reading from a book that I couldn't [View Full Entry]

Flatmates

Sunday, a good day to get things done. Hopefully. This morning Leslie and I headed downtown to Broadmarsh in hopes of getting a few things. I tried to find another pair of warm-ups for frisbee, striking out at TK Maxx but hopefully I'll get back down to sports world or something and get some. Thinking positive about that one....it gets a bit cold here folks! I did however find a really cute top and a few things at Wilkinsons (ie tumblers that I'm splitting with Leslie, another microwaveable bowl and TP). Oh and of course I got myself some cough drops [View Full Entry]

So this morning I woke up to a wonderful sun shining away and it felt like a typical Santa Cruz sunny morning. It was awesome! Add the leaves falling gracefully from the trees in multitudes of fall colours and you've completed the picture. I love that all the trees here change colors. You can actually see a change in the seasons as opposed to simply feeling the change in the temperature. In all the gross sickness and therefore laps in memory this week, I completely forgot to mention my field trip around Nottingham city. On Thursday morning I woke up really [View Full Entry]

It's finally Friday!!! Yippeee. I'd probably be much more excited if I wasn't still trying to get rid of my cold. Although if it goes away by Monday (aka Halloween) then I'll be a very happy camper. :) On the off chance that it decides to stick around, I'll not be a very happy person to be around...maybe that could be my costume, a grouch. Grouches: Oscar or the Grinch?? or Scrooge?? Hmmm...I'll have to think about all those and decide later. Seminar this morning was educational. It was kinda weird. I'm not used to going to section and discussing a [View Full Entry]

Okay so nothing exciting has been happening over the past couple days. The only news is that my cold has gotten worse and I hope that's a sign that I'll start to get better...SOON! I hate being sick. Other than that life has continued as normal. After skipping practice on Wed, I decided that I would try and go to practice today. It's indoors instead of outside so I'd be better off and wouldn't necessarily worsen my condition. Thus I decided that I'd try to do as much as possible at practice, which turned out to be a lot more than [View Full Entry]

So today was really windy which was kinda cool. Except the wind was fairly matched by some pouring rain. The weather is kinda strange. It will be pouring rain for an hour or two and then stop and be really windy then go back to rain and so on and so forth. Anyways, I went to class and learned a bit more cultural history on the Soviet Union which was pretty interesting. After class I headed to the library for a bit and then back to Broadgate for some grub. Yay for mashed potatoes! Then I kinda messed about with my [View Full Entry]

Fling 2(L-R):Me,Tat,Craig,Dave,Metal Dave,Fish,Anna & Pete (in the middle)
After a pretty late night I headed out early to catch a lift to Nott'm Trent Uni for day 2 of Damme Heere Slamme Fayre ultimate tourney. Our first game was Fling 1 v. Fling 2 to see who would go to the Middle Eight finals or the Bottom Four. Fling 2 beat Fling 1 something like 10-2 which was pretty bad. It was a really good game though. So Fling 2 moved into the Middle Eight and Fling 1 went to the Bottom Four to fight it out for the spoon. Tristan showed up for the second game of the [View Full Entry]

Fling 1
Sideways Fling 2

So today was my first indoor ultimate tourney, day 1. It was awesome!! Our team (Fling 2) played really really well. And of course it was loads of fun. We played about 6 games today. Each game was 17 minutes long, which is really short for ultimate but that's how indoors works. I actually really like it because you have more playing time and you play harder because you have a short amount of time to get anything done, much less a great amount of space. We did however have a few accidents and injuries today. Not so splendid but we'll [View Full Entry]

So it's Friday and I don't have class today. Yay! That's usually a sign that I need to go out of town. However, this weekend I will be participating in my first indoor ultimate tourney. It should be really really fun and interesting. I'm hoping to learn lots. Being that I don't have class I had planned on exploring Nott'm a little bit, but my plans were waylaid for several reasons. Mainly because I couldn't find a travel-around-town buddy which is essential and because it started to rain pretty good and exploring outdoor things in the rain is a sure way [View Full Entry]

Quote to ponder: 'I'm tired of chasing my dreams. I'm just gonna ask where they are going, and hook up with them later.'--quote from Tristan Today is just craziness and coming off of Wednesday night 9am classes are the absolute worst. However, today's student lecture was really really good which is kinda scary but I have a long time to work on it, so that's a plus. After lecture I went to the student union to get some more paper, too much notetaking here!, and then headed to the library. I had to read a bit more about Saint's Cults before [View Full Entry]
