Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Our Thanksgiving Feast
Our Thanksgiving Feast
Green bean casserole, cheese puffs, mashed potatoes, cooked carrots, and cranberry chicken. Yummy!
Today is Thanksgiving, and of course it was lucky that I'm on reading week. However, since Thanksgiving is not a national holiday here, it's going to be quite fun to celebrate it with my fellow North Americans (Taylor, Judy, and Leslie). Potluck is the order of the day with a fabulous menu as well. Our thanksgiving dinner will have cranberry chicken with mashed potatoes, cooked carrots, and a lovely green bean casserole. We will also be devouring cheese puffs and ending it all off with some cranberry ice cream. And of course a great big group hug and lots of pics! [View Full Entry]

Thanksgiving Crew

So my computer decided to freeze and then not start up correctly. Just great. And I had to be out of the country for that one, goodie. We'll see if it decides to like me better tomorrow but if it doesn't then I'm off to track down IT services. Hopefully I can figure out what the problem is otherwise I'm finding an exterior monitor to hook into my computer so I can at least see what's on it since the backlight or some stupid thing went out on it again. At least it's under warranty still!!! Therefore if you don't hear [View Full Entry]

To borrow a quote from Leslie, today is Remembrance Day (or Veterans' Day). It's actually pretty cool that they actually celebrate today with much more remembrance than we do in the US (unless I'm mistaken). They take a moment of silence for at least 1min at 11:11am and in Australia they have half-days in commemoration of all those who fought. Everyone wears red poppies too, which is really awesome. It seems that Vets' Day is way downplayed in the states when it shouldn't be at all but celebrated with gratitude. Being Friday, I had a seminar this morning discussing the Arab-Israeli [View Full Entry]

I ran out of space in the last entry to talk about the craziness that ensued on Tuesday regarding my presentation report. It was unclear as to when it was due, even after I asked, and so when I received an email that wanted it in soon I kinda freaked out a bit. Anyways, I finished it and Vick was able to read over it for me and make the necessary changes, which is always helpful. So after a lot of running around and confusion, I turned it in and everything's been squared away. Phew! On to today, Wednesday. The typical [View Full Entry]

Ok so more specifics about B'ham! Yay!! CAPTAIN'S REPORT FOR FLING 2: Fling 2's first game of the wknd was against Haze 3, who were mostly beginners so we fancied our chances. We put a zone on them and it worked pretty well, but we weren't very oragnised in our deep work and with a bit of luck for them, they managed to score on us. When we changed to man, they were just too lanky and athletic for us so we struggled with that too. It took us a while to get going, but by then it was too late [View Full Entry]

Thursday mornings are soo early after Wednesdays. But I have to go to class and today was no exception. Today in Nott'm: Making of a Provincial City (which hereafter will be reffered to as Nott'm City class) was another seminar...one that was pretty interesting but kinda of common knowledge, particularly in the history of England. Topic of discussion: Health and Housing. The group did a really good job presenting the info and it's quite amazing that the class actually took up the 2 hr slot. If you really want to know more about the slum conditions and horrible sanitation of provincial [View Full Entry]

What a brilliant morning....and a gloomy afternoon. Morning: I went to my post-1945 class and learned about the end of empire, mainly for Britain and France. It was pretty interesting, however the prof talked a mile a minute and even ended early!!! This class is only an hour long to begin with so you think she could have maybe slowed it down a bit...geez! Anyways, after class I returned some books to the library and succeeded in printing off the agenda for class tomorrow morning. However, I failed to look up books so the internet shall have to suffice. I will [View Full Entry]

Autumn is Spectacular!
Pretty trees...

All Saint's Day...what a huge coincidence with my presentation on Saints' Cults (or is it?) So I was really worried about this presentation. My group (of which there were 5) had to basically give the lecture for the week. It is technically classified as a seminar but read through the lines please....it was the lecture. And yes it was 2 hrs long!!! We did however do a marvelous job I think. There was a lot of information and specific case studies that could have been used and I think we did a fairly good job presenting it all. For the one [View Full Entry]

Band Aid!
Band Aid!
Me in my oh so bright and sunshiny costume.
It definitely feels like Halloween here, especially with all the leaves on the ground and the trees turning into spooky creatures. The plans for the night are all a jumbled mess that will hopefully be sorted fairly soon. As for today, I went to class for 10am which happened to be canceled so I then proceeded to the library, which is pretty much next door. Basically I spent the entire day in the library with a quick lunch break in the middle. It was actually really good because I got in some last minute reading from a book that I couldn't [View Full Entry]
