Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Exams have ceased to rule my life now!! So excited. However, it is also a sad day because people have already started to leave. :( Deborah and Cynthia left last week for Italy (I so totally wanted to go with them but my stubborn lecturer wouldn't let me write an essay rather than sitting the exam). They seem to have had an interesting time sleeping in airports and such because the hostel had overbooked. I won't have that problem, hopefully, when I get to Italy in 2 DAYS TIME!! It's T-38 hrs for me to be in Roma, Italia. I have [View Full Entry]

Hiyas everyone! I'm in full tilt British mode now and getting my internet connection sorted out at my place in Leicester. It's really a great city and I'll be posting pics of it within the next week. Leicester people don't get many Americans visiting, so my accent is a suprise to most people. I must look as if I fit in, though, because everywhere I go, someone asks me for directions. So, today I took a twenty minute train ride to Nottingham. That's right, the old stomping grounds of that fabled hero, Robin Hood. The most interesting aspect of Nottingham has [View Full Entry]

In Honor of Robin Hood

As it is my 21st birthday, I continued to do my typical Tuesday routine. A bit lame for some people, but at least it kept me busy. So I went to class, which was a bit boring but not too bad and then hung out with Amy at Rutland. We scarfed down our lunch and then headed off to our seminar which was incredibly dull as usual. There's just something about that class which makes the seminars so incredibly tedious. Afterwards I decided that I wasn't going to do any work because that's just no fun on your birthday, plus I [View Full Entry]

Hi Borts, So we awoke from our night at the travel inn, collected our belongings and headed off to a nearby maccy d's for breakfast. After satisfying our stomachs we headed off to the great Centre Parcs. The weather was looking a little grim and felt a tad bit chilly but we decided we'd make the best of it. On travelling along a newly built road to centre parcs (no more recognisable bus stop landmark Liam) Willis spotted something of great interest to her. "Look Dave" she said excitedly "there's a Mc Arthur Glen over there, oh my god whats that [View Full Entry]

Sitting in my room listening to Simon and Garfunkel, procrastinating once again, I've decided to update everyone on past events and awesome future plans. So here goes.... I gave my only seminar presentation for the semester on Thursday, which went really well I think. We were the first in our seminar group to go and after a scary and shaky start we actually pulled it together and really knew what we were talking about. Amazing, isn't it? The topic was pretty interesting as well: sexuality and asceticism in 6th century Europe. This weekend Nott'm hosted University Women's Indoor National [View Full Entry]

In talking to other international students the number one question asked after one finds out which country you hail from is what the culture is like, in order to compare to what they understand as culture from home. Well, I've found that there's a problem in answering this question with the answer close to being "I don't know" until one actually stops to ponder if there actually is a culture and how do I find it. For the US it seems that there isn't one overarching culture that can describe such a vast landscape of different peoples. And in addition to [View Full Entry]

As a lot of international friends continue to catch flights home, we begin to attend numerous bon voyage parties and get-togethers. Thus it was the case, although for the second and perhaps for a third time, when Tarishi was headed back to Melbourne, Australia. In honor of her departure, a few of us got together and headed to Wagamama's, a fantastic Japanese noodle restaurant unique unto itself, and to which most of the Aussie's had not yet experienced. We talked and observed and ate some delicious food. However, Kateri's food was incredibly late so we all tried to eat rather slowly [View Full Entry]

with a full day of classes for me. Or so I thought. Apparently I'm not very good at reading the module timetable, or lack of one for my Protestant Nation class. Both Amy and I thought that we had a lecture for that module this morning and showed up for it, but apparently we don't. Which means that my Thursday classes go from 1pm to 5pm, rather than a class from 10-11am as well. At least I can sleep in on Thursday mornings then. My classes this semester seem to be really good so far. And for those who are interested [View Full Entry]

Carebear Stare!
Carebear Stare!
Me as a carebear...yes I know I'm a dork.
Famous around Great Britain with Uni students are pub crawls. They could possibly be famous elsewhere but it seems that it's a great pastime for social clubs to participate in. And therefore I found myself dressed up like a Carebear and walking from one pub to the next with a whole bunch of other people dressed up in likewise outrageous outfits and all members of Fling. The theme for our pub crawl social was the A,B,Cs. So each team, either team A, B, or C had to dress up in a costume of some sort that started with the letter of [View Full Entry]
