Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Moss everywhere

nothing special really just moss grows on almost everything
23rd Nov After leaving Carlisle I then headed to Yorkshire to drop off Anna (one of the road crew) then proceeded to York to look around. Since there was not much time left I only entered York Minster. The cathedral was pretty amazing inside; I was a bit shocked to see how much was inside. There were head stones from graves and plagues, coffins and many alters. The place had more packed into it than I had ever imagined. After leaving York the next destination was agreed to be Nottingham, I had a feeling it could be interesting visiting the famous [View Full Entry]

Hi again, Ok, so I said I would keep the last one short, and I kind of lied. Not on purpose, but there it is. So I'm not making any promises this time. Up to Thursday 9th. Didn't really do anything on friday either, spent basically the whole day inside, but I did go to the post office, and bought 3 boxes, packed up the stuff to post home, but then couldn't carry it to the post office to post it, so ended up taking it the next day. Saturday. Went to the postoffice. The staff there thought I was crazy. [View Full Entry]

Hello everybody, Well i'm nearing the departure day and i'm still getting the little little people inside of my head raising their flags of doubt, some saying "what are you running away from" and some asking " was there anything more i could have done". When i was younger i really didn't understand why you had to go away to find yourself but now with those halcyon days behind me i see why! it's so that you can remove yourself from surroundings of familiar friends/places and buidings that you only serve as a reminder of the past,i'm hoping this extended vacation [View Full Entry]

Well, we've both spent the last two weekends catching up with friends (thanks everyone!) and we've got just one day left at work! Its going to be strange not having to work for three months but somehow I think we'll cope just fine! We then have Thursday and Friday to do those "last minute" jobs, pack our rucksacks, and to see the family before we head off. Itinerary We'll depart from Chesterfield, England, in the morning of Saturday 4th November 2006, taking a coach to Heathrow airport in London. From there we'll have to endure a 27hr flight to Aukland, including [View Full Entry]

Hi Ho..Hi Ho...its Hoff travelling we go....
Forget the 5000 metre hike up to Macchu Picchu...Balancing the rucksacks to the nearest Kilo will be Donnas biggest challenge!!!
Test packing our rucksacks to see if we can fit that extra pair of welly warmers or duds and socks. No Donna...the rucksacks dont have to be 'even'!! Our backs are aching at just the thought of carrying these things. Other backpackers we spoke to say halve whatever you plan on taking and then halve it again....I dont think so! This is the 21st century after all...What would Buck Rogers say??? Packing up the house is one of the worst bits so far...We are convinced that career gappers have a much more difficult time of it than other gappers. We have [View Full Entry]

The land of Robin Hood. I travelled to Nottingham to umpire a match between the Nottingham Scorpions and the Reading Roos. Both teams play in the British Australian Rules Football League (BARFL). Train travel is very expensive in the UK and it cost me £45 to get from London to Nottingham! They really encourage British people to see their own country. [View Full Entry]
