I drove a lot of the way to York to give Greg a break as it was all freeways, I didn’t like the narrow windy country roads. York wasn’t really what I expected. I was expecting, I think, a little like Bath with the old sandstone buildings etc, but it was a real hive of activity and busy little town with mixture of buildings. Again the search was on for a B & B. ( I think I like the pre booking better it saves you the messing around and stress of trying to park and find out prices etc) We had big variety of prices here as well, finally we found one for the same price we have been previously paying and about 30 pound less than the first 4 we looked at. It had a huge room, car park and wireless internet as well as the full breakfast. So the search was over. It was only about a 10 minutes walk into the centre of town. It was about 8pm when we settled in and decided to walk into town to find something to eat (something light as we had had big carvery for lunch at the Lakes). We
didn’t go all the way in to town because there was quite a variety of takeaways on the way. We decided on sushi - just right at that time of night. We took it back to the room and I went to the supermarket and bought some rolls etc for lunch next day. Early-ish night - well was supposed to be Greg is a night owl and not a morning person, I am the opposite. He sits up in bed on the mobile, the computer and with the television on, and if anyone has heard my computer at the moment it is really noisy and annoying in your ear when you are trying to catch up sleep.
Next morning after yet again a huge breakfast, we left the car at B & B thank god, because York is a busy, busy place and parking would be a hassle. We went straight to Jorvick which is an underground Viking museum. York is well known because when they were rebuilding some city buildings, they found a Viking city underneath. We were both expecting a bit more of a diggings up type of museum, but the exhibition was actually part museum and part
fun ride. It was still good and talked about the history and the Viking remains, but was more aimed at getting the children interested and educated. Next we went to the tower which is all that is left of the castle of York. We then wandered around the canals and ended up the trader’s merchant hall which was very interesting building with lots of history. We had picnic lunch in their garden. We walked back through the Shambles shopping area onto the York cathedral. This was an amazing building with sculptured walls/ceilings, awesome stained glass windows etc, however the entry fee was quite high and neither Greg wanted to pay the fee, as we had seen a few by now. It also meant we could leave York a bit earlier than we had anticipated for our next 3 hour haul to Worchester to visit a friend from Airlie Beach. Before we left, though, we went for a drive around the city’s defensive wall. York city is totally surrounded by a fort type wall to keep out the early invaders.
