This is my first entry in a long while. I had a fabulous, relaxing holiday back home in California. I loved seeing so many of you... it made coming back to classes and research quite hard. The first week back I moped quite a bit. However, after a few sunny days and with the first flowers blooming in gardens and fields, things really are looking up. My courses this term (South African Literatures and Documentary/Ethnographic Film) are both extremely interesting. The works we have been reading for South African Lit are all new to me, but compelling and emotional... I actually might try to work one of the authors into my dissertation, but we'll see... As for the rest of life outside of class, I spend almost every moment when not studying with Alison and Anthony. They keep me sane and they keep me laughing. Last week we decided to take on alter-egos of Lord and Lady Fairfax (Anthony and Alison), and Lady Darlington (me). Basically, there's just a lot of bowing and grand gesticulating involved. I don't really know why I am telling you this, other than to express how being silly is pretty much the only way not to
go crazy mid-research! Tana and her boyfriend Stu, and of course Shannon are also a big part of what makes York a continually fun (and funny) place to be. This upcoming week is actually my 'reading week,' and I've decided to leave York and do my reading elsewhere. I am going up to Edinburgh to spend Valentines Day with Mia (and her dad too, who is visiting), and then I am flying to Prague to stay with Ian for a few days. I can't wait! I will take lots of pictures and actually post them, I promise. I am attaching a few photos taken since I got back to York, though honestly, I haven't been very good at photographing my life lately. I hope you are all healthy and happy and loving life. Since I don't have any particular Valentine this year (silly holiday anyway, isn't it?) I'll be sending my love telepathically to where each of you are.
I promise a more exciting update soon!
Transatlantic Love,
Ryan
Alison on the BoatThere were two adorable little English boys behind her, but they dodged my camera. They sang EVERY verse of 'London Bridge'... I didn't even know there was more than one!
