Sometimes you just strike lucky! The weather turned out to be perfect and the Cleethorpes air show was fantastic. The Battle of Britain Memorial flight were, of course, wonderful but as usual, the Red Arrows stole the show!!... read more

I'm on the 8:11 Sheffield to Cleethorpes with my knitting, heading for a long walk along the beach in the East coast sunshine then on for a bag of chips at the Mermaid chippy in front of the sea. The mermaid chip shop was once the ladies waiting room at the station and you can still pick out the old English elegance in the windows but that's about it. Cleethorpes is such a joy with it's old tired British Sea side look, washy paintwork and brilliant sky. In about 1994, I read Laura Esquivel’s ‘Like Water for Chocolate’ She wrote stories around food and cooking as a means of communication and transferring her emotions to others, through crying into the food and laughing whilst working. I can’t remember the story exactly but I can remember the ... read more

Nipping to Cleethorpes is not traveling, in the wider sense but taking a trip out of a land-locked city to the nearest north east coastal town. It’s about taking a chance – on weather, light, emotions, friendships, whether your boots are water proof, if you are hungry – quite possibly anything but the biggest factor is being open to the possibility of feeling free. If all these things come together – the result is pure gold. Cleethorpes now signifies that possibility for one friend and I – it’s a chance of soul-rinsing. You see, you never know what you will find when you get there and – in the fading English Winter light, you can find it all. It’s all there. On the platform at Sheffield station, slipping in with the crowds waiting for the same ... read more

We often get quite complacent about ordinary places. Having grown up in the seaside town of Cleethorpes, I never really think about blogging wherever I go to see my family there. This time, with a new camera in hand, I thought I would give it a bit of praise. One thing which was certainly not praiseworthy was the weather! It was freezing cold and we frequently cowered away from the rain. Early may should be sunny and warm, but we had leaden skies, four degrees, threats of frost and driving horizontal rain! Not nice!! Even so, we try to get a bit of exercise as often as we can. We have our usual routes for a stroll. One of those is the seafront where we brace ourselves against the Easterly coastal breeze (or gale depending on ... read more

Last week, we talked about needing to see the sea and the big sky of a coastline and to feel the open elements. We have been feeling land-locked. So, we talked about the nearest coastal place to travel to by train and came up with Cleethorpes. Which is how we arrived here today on a whim, through a brief five minute conversation, a thought, an idea - a choice. Cleethorpes is all new to me. And, the surprise on exiting the small train station, crossing the road, walking straight onto the long expanse of barren beach, faced by 4 old donkeys, a pier, the sea in the distance and a long long horizon against a porcelain blus sky poured great joy into me and I knew instantly the day was going to be good. May I ... read more

So I am writing this after a big day of packing and unpacking. My case is way under the weight thankfully(means i can bring more stuff back!) and I am pretty sure I have everything I will need, if not TOUGH! If it is something essential I'm sure I can get it whilst I'm there, its not like I'm going to be in the middle of nowhere. I dont feel nervous funnily enough, I think I still cant quite believe I am actually going! So I am pretty chilled out about it all at the moment. I do have little bursts of excitedness and I am sure once I am on the plane I am going to be very excited! I dont really have much to say apart from I hope that this blog will be ... read more

So it is getting really close now, 3 weeks and 6 days!! The nerves are kicking in but thankfully the excitement overpowers it. I had a little panic a few days ago after going through my papers. I realised that the flight times overlapped on the journey home. I called the Cosmos and they said it was a massive mistake and that they will sort it out for me. I wanted to doublecheck my flight to Heathrow was ok so i called BMI only to be told it had been cancelled in April!!! I wasnt happy, when were they going to let me know???! So after about 45 mins of panicking anf worrying whether my dream holiday would even happen, Cosmos called back. The lovely lady told me that everything was all sorted. I was now ... read more

Just a little update on some of my buys! I bought the case last year, i was looking for something bright but also light and this weighs less than my handbag!! I have been buying holiday clothes this week. There is something so nice about buying brightly coloured vests and shorts when you know where you will be wearing them. I kind of have it in my head what i will be taking with me,a pair of jeans, cropped trousers, few paris of shorts and a couple of sundresses should be enough. Then a few vests, tshirts, floaty tops and a cardigan and light jacket. I am not really planning on going out at night apart from dinner so i will most likely team a dress with a pair of nice sandals for a more dressier outfit. Shoe ... read more

So a little update to tell you that my trips are booked! There are a couple of other short trips i am thinking of taking but i am still unsure about them at the moment. I arrive in San Fracisco on the Wednesday so figured i would spend the next 2 days exploring. On the FridayI have booked to do the night tour of Alcatraz, i hear it is the most complete tour and the views of the bay will be amazing. I leave San Fran Sunday afternoon so I have plenty of time to see the sealion on Pier 39 and perhaps visit the Aquarium. I would like to sample Dim Sum in Chinatown and maybe brave an oyster in one of the famous Oyster bars on Fishermans wharf...just one though and chased with a ... read more

It's Canada Day and we are off to tangle with more roundabouts and pubs! Left Norwich for Sandringham the Royal summer home. Queen not at home (She is defintely avoiding us). Toured the grounds and left for Cleethorpes on the east coast. Landscape in this area is gently rolling hills and quaint little villages. Arrived in Cleethorpes and walked the promenade looking for a pub. Found the Smugglers Inn and stopped by for a drink and a bite to eat. I tried 3 different beers (more properly ales & bitters) and Elke had the Wine special. Buy 2 glasses and get the whole bottle. (she was very happy) We were watching the Wimbedon match between Hewitt & Roddick when all of a sudden we heard the theme song from Coronation St. Elke was out of her ... read more
