I have had an enforced absence from the football obscurities of Eastern Europe of late. The closest I have been is watching Shepshed Dynamo, if that counts? There hasn't been a great deal of time for travel recently. A family bereavement and unrelated illness of another, curtailed any provisional plans. There are always provisional plans. If Mohammed cannot go to the mountain, the mountain can come to him. I scoured the lower leagues for inspiration and hatched a plan to see another Dynamo play. Loughborough Dynamo that is! In the old East, Dynamo was the prefix for the clubs under the control of Secret Police. There were many incarnations - Dynamo Berlin, Dinamo Bucharest and perhaps the most famous in Britain .......Moscow Dynamo. As puppets of a less than friendly section of the state apparatus, they ... read more

About 25 years ago, some friends of mine were walking down Maid Marion Way and a car pulled up alongside. A cheery American leaned out and said “Can you tell me the way to “Looga Barooga”. We still call it that to this day. Loughborough, pronounced Luff Burra, just doesn’t flow off the tongue. We haven’t been for a while and had never been on the bus before. The journey seems to take an eternity. The Other Half got agitated. We were en route to what I would refer to as the Hereford trilogy, but more of that later. The bus now takes a detour through the Railway Station. The Railway Station is somewhat divorced from the town centre. A typical Victorian add-on to an existing town. The Brush engineering plant seems to have shrunk and ... read more

After a mediocre breakfast in the hotel restaurant (we should have ordered just the continental) we moved on to Robin Hood country. First stop was at the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre where we took a walk through the forest to the Major Oak (named after a Major in the British army not because of its size). At about 1000 years old, it has a large cavity in the middle of the trunk and its huge branches are propped up all around to try to conserve it. Several other trees are between 400 and 800 years old and are tended by the conservation staff to try to keep them thriving with mixed success. The forest was not what we expected of Sherwood with more open spaces and they even let cattle in to graze in some areas. ... read more

- It is perhaps fitting to have an entry and some photos for Loughborough, UK, where I spent the first half of the year in, doing my student exchange. A disclaimer: this entry will have little if not nothing to do with Loughborough, but rather a 5 months late entry that includes some of my reflections and retrospective thoughts on events that occur close to half a year back. - In the blink of an eye, close to half a year has passed since I returned back to Singapore! And yes, procrastination has had its way; till now, I have yet to post my adventures/stories on my Europe part II journey, a 1 and a half months trip taking me to the Scottish highlands, exotic Iceland, and the exciting lively cities of the Western European countries. ... read more

Geo: 52.7708, -1.20435Well at long last we're ready, I think, all the necessary things like house insurance renewals which lapse whilst we're away, contact lists in the event of just about everything, and a check list of things to be checked whilst we're away for our house minders AKA Stephen & Michelle have been taken care of.The suitcases are packed, only 5 this time, and thankfully as my medication's been reduced since the last trip I don't need a complete flight case just for my meds. I still have half a flight case full of meds but it leaves room for some of the more important things like wine boxes. Tomorrow morning we catch the coach at Leicester Forest Service station ready for a stress free journey down to Southampton. Friday 13/01/12Well the day's arrived, the ... read more

The last few days have been very eventful, we had our Christmas work function on Friday which was a great night. Got to meet many of the girlfriends, wifes, husbands of fellow workers while having a lovely meal at The Manor inn (Quorn), of course far too much alcohol for some people. But there were no fights, no embarassing moments so everyone will be back to work on Monday. (After a weeks holiday!) Saturday night was watching Kevin's cousin Louise sing in a karaoke semi final that unfortunately she got voted off. I felt so sorry for her as everyone was there supporting her. She only went in it for a laugh and ended up in the Semi finals, so she did well. There were young kids also in a kids karaoke competition that were so ... read more

Well I arrived in England safe and sound! I can't believe how far away from home I am, it's kind of scary and exciting at the same time. It already feels so different with all the houses being brick! I can't tell if we are going around in circles when driving. One thing though, it's not as bad as on coronation street like everyone was saying it would be, there are alot of green fields/countryside. Kevin and I arrived in a heat wave, the hottest it's been in over 100 years apparently and we can't sleep well with the heat. We have the fans going like crazy, especially coming from New Zealand where we were in the middle of winter.. I definitely miss home, but i'm looking forward to what's to come.. http://www.travelblog.org/gmaps/map_2Of.html... read more
