Well I think this maybe a trip of a lifetime for us. We are getting ready to sail across the Atlantic which is such an amazing thought and on a Tall Ship, what more could you want. We have now sold both our holiday cottages which gives us back our freedom to travel which we both love dearly. I have decided as this is such an epic trip I am going to keep a blog of the adventures. We start our adventure in Lisbon so this is where I will start the blog tomorrow. We are also being joined by friends Eric and Sue. We met them on the Star Flyer which is another Tall ship in 2017 when we sailed from Athens to Malta. I must admit I have always said under no circumstances will ... read more

One of the great things about this holiday has been the frequent changes that take place. I have travelled by myself and then with different groups of people and for the last 4 days I’ve been watching cricket with my long-time mate from the cricket club, Shane Murray, aka Muzza. I still remember sitting at his dining table, almost a year ago, lap top open, choosing tickets and in the following months, working out other logistics, so that we could have a great time at Old Trafford watching the Aussies take on the old enemy. The disappointment of losing the last test made the stakes higher for the 4th and 5th tests of the series and a win in either of them will see Australia retain the Ashes. We haven’t come home from England with the ... read more

Yogi Bhajan said "A failure is only a step on the way to your success" Ok then blog here we are again. On the road in Gabby for yet another night in Southport. Why are we here I hear you ask? Well it all stems from our house move. The house we are buying is being sold "sold as seen" which means it is full of rubbish which will require moving, there is no information on the suppliers of services and more importantly it has no phone nor internet connection. As we will be living in Gabby for the best part of six months we need WiFi in some form. We have decided to bite the bullet and pay for a mobile system which will work wherever we are . Or at least that is the ... read more

We decided to head into the Forest of Bowland a bit more today, since we'd only really driven through it on the rest of this holiday! Our destination was the Gisburn Forest & Stocks Reservoir. The Dale Head Ramble was a 3.2mile walk along the edge of the reservoir then up through Birch Hills, down to Bottoms Beck and back along Egg Berry Road (a stoney track rather than surfaced road). Despite being a forestry commision plantation it was a beautiful wood to walk through, sunlight through through the green leaves and glinting off the water, blue skies above. From the bird hides by the reservoir we saw several ducks and geese, a flock of lapwings, and a barn owl hunting on the opposite shore! After lunch we drove over towards the coast driving through the ... read more

It had rained overnight and was a cloudy, drizzley sort of day so we went to Lancaster and visited the castle. We went on a guided tour and heard all about the history of the prisions (closed in 2012) and the county and criminal courts (which are still used so no photos allowed). Sadly the battlements are out of bounds so no good views of the city either. We had a tasty pub lunch after which Dad went off to visit his friend who lives in Silverdale but managed to leave his bag at the pub with his phone in it! Mark ran ater him to the car park but he'd already left. The rest of us pottered around the market (buying onion bhajis, eggs, milk sweets, books and a rag rug!) then went to the ... read more

Monday morning we all squashed into Mark’s car again and drove to the north end of Morecambe Bay to visit Arnside Knott. Mum & Will couldn't face the steep losoe rocky path to the top so enjoyed strolling through the woods below whist the rest of us when up to the view point. We it was a lovely spot with views as far as Blackpool Tower to the south and Pit Hill Castle on the peninsula to the west. We then had a lovely stroll through the woods around the top of the Knott & saw Arnside Tower. Once we'd met up back at the cars we drove to the Leighton Moss RSPB reserve, where had a tasty lunch and went round the hides on the reserve and up the tower. There were lots of ducks, ... read more

Mark & I set off after an early lunch (well, late fry-up brunch) & headed towards The North. As usual there was traffic on the M6 but with one quick stop we arrived at the Station House, Melling around 5pm. After a quick look around we put the kettle on just in time for Mum, Dad & Will to turn up with the tea! They had set off mid-morning but stopped at Tatton Park to look around the hall & gardens - there were some interesting bits in the house but Mum found the gardens a bit boring. After a cuppa and deciding who had which rooms we left mum sorting out supper (venison stew) and went for a walk through Melling - where the pub had been converted to a garage - and across fields ... read more

Out and about again today, this time to Rufford Old Hall (NT) in Lancashire. Siri took as around the south of Greater Manchester this morning onto the M60 before guiding us onto the M56. From the M56 we switched to the M6 heading north as far as Interchange 27. Leaving the motorway we headed off into the countryside on the A5209, B5246 and A59 to the small village of Rufford. Using our Australian National Trust cards to enter Rufford Old Hall we saved ourselves another £7.50 each! Built in the 1530s Rufford Old Hall is one of Lancashire’s finest Tudor buildings. Built during the reign of Henry VIII, it was originally built to an H-plan for Sir Robert Hesketh. Apparently this was the thing to do at the time, you built your grand manor laid out ... read more

Today we headed off to Haworth, Yorkshire where we had arranged to catch up with our Australian friends, Janet and Jill, who are also over here in England at the moment. Not planning to arrive in Haworth until later in the afternoon we programmed the SatNav for Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham near Burnley. Siri took us there by way of the M60 ring road around the north-eastern quadrant of Greater Manchester and then on to the M66 and A56 heading north. Just for a change this is National Trust property rather than an English Heritage property!Described as an Elizabethan gem in the heart of industrial Lancashire it is also affectionately referred to as the ‘Downton of the North’ because it was redesigned in the 1850s by Sir Charles Barry the designer of the Houses of Parliament ... read more

Manchester continued. Wednesday. A walking along the canal day. We particularly wanted to see an area of Manchester along the Irwell river as Alison’s family history studies had thrown up a relative who lost a sister drowned in the “Emma” disaster of 1828. This was a large boat with 200 people on board for the launch ceremony when it capsized, drowning about 47. There are some fascinating news reports of tragedy and heroism from witnesses at the time. It is also the site of the New Baily courts and prison from which Alison’s 2x great grandfather was transported to Van Diemens Land. We started at The Lowry complex at Salford. A large theatre, shopping complex and media studio area with grand modern buildings and large open spaces beside the quays. Much of the riverside area has ... read more
