An Indian Summer
Ballybunion hasnt seen such great weather in months and it brought a number of daytrippers to the town The nice lady presenting the weather declared that there was “...autumnal...” weather on the way. Autumnal indeed! Rain and wind greeted me on my return to England following 30 consecutive days of sunshine throughout Europe . I was only boasting yesterday that I had had sunshine every day of my holiday however today it is bloody awful!
I really enjoyed my time in Ireland. Ballybunion may not be the most exciting place on earth but the sunshine, beaches and the ocean is a lovely combination. Top that off with the odd pint of guinness and winning some money on the horses at the Listowel races on Sunday is was also a very profitable stay.
The flight back on Ryanair was an uneventful one. If there was ever a day I fancied a stoush with that airline it would have been yesterday, my last flight EVER with Ryanair, but I had no reason to complain this time.
With just five days left of this holiday I am back with my friends Mick and Sal in Kent until I fly to Sydney on Friday night (London time). I haven't planned much for the week except for dinner with Paul and
Mark on Thursday night.
Today I headed into London for breakfast, a visit to the
Museum of London’s exhibition on the Great Fire of London and wander around Southwark and of course Borough Market , even if most of it was closed.
I stopped for breakfast at the
Little Dorrit Café and had an English breakfast (with the usual cast of ingredients) and a cup of tea which cost me £ 4.20.
With the heavy rain outside it was a great day for the tube. Walking , even with an umbrella and a rain jacket, was uncomfortable. It didn’t take long for my my jeans to be soaked from the knee down and my less than symetrical umbrella was not up to the task so the tube was the best option.
Two years ago I bought a London visitors
Oyster Card and it saves time and money at tube stations and on the buses. Sydney should consider buying the Oyster Card infrastructure to solve its public transport ticketing needs. It is probably the most efficient and effective pre-paid ticket system in the world and it sure beats travel passes and weekly tickets in Sydney.
The Museum of London was a
The sun sets on my five days in Ballybunion
The great weather also brought great sunsets. The sun going down over the Atlantic Ocean little dull and the exhibition, London’s Burning, which is about the
Great Fire of London hardly excited the small number of visitors that were there (including me.)
After the museum it was briefly up to the shops on Oxford Street, as much to window shop as to get away from the rain on the streets. On the way back to London Bridge station I bought a chunk of crozier blue cheese, bread from
Neals Yard, jamon and padron peppers from
Brindisa and cumberland sausages from the
Ginger Pig Sadly that unique TV Chef Keith Floyd died of a heart attack today. He was the first to inspire me to cook Spanish food with his book Floyd on Spain. Also on the death list today was Patrick Swayze whom someone described as a great actor. Its amazing how great they become after death. In all honesty he was B grade at best, having said that I must respect the dead and that I will do. But lets face facts, he wasnt a very good actor!
Not sure what will be happening for the rest of the week, it will probably involve taking Mick and Sal’s dogs for a walk. I might go see a movie if the weather continues to be as dreary as it is now. Perhaps Penelope Cruz in Broken Embraces if it is still on in London.

Swaying with swayze
No way was he a great actor but I am currently seeing his last TV serial The Beast and adds something to the unorthodox FBI agent he plays something part of the character that seeps into the whole show dark (more crime you solve the more there is) and the need to act and act appropriate to the urgency of the situation. Which might explain why he got the role actual life situation but anying I never been a Swayse fan but he is very good here. Take care and nice to hear from you and your travels
