Sadly we cannot take the Mazda bongo with us. We will have no base vehicle, we will be relying on Trains, Planes and buses. Our accommodation will have to be cheap as we can find. Hostels, motels maybe even a tent!. When planning a world trip, with such a big canvas, what do you see and what do you leave out?. First it has to be what you instinctively want to see. Ali's was the Great Barrier reef mine was a remote Polynesian island. Initially we wanted to see the Galapagos and Machu Pichu in South America but this would have substantially added to the cost as well as taken a lot of time out of our journey. For the sake of connecting flights we do have a rough itinerary, but the beauty of this type ... read more

The drive from Crystal Palace to Chartwell was only an hour and took us along quite a lot of roads which were marked as “unsuitable for heavy goods vehicles”. Not terribly well suited for a Tandy either as some areas were little more than single track with lots of bends, often blind. All made worse by the fact that the entire cycling fraternity of the county chose today to cycle the route we were taking. Quite hazardous really and we were pleased when we eventually came to a proper road which was wide enough for a white line down the middle. Chartwell is located in the middle of lovely rolling countryside and the house and grounds are an absolute delight. We’ve joined the National Trust this year so entry was free and we were waved into ... read more

Set in a vast medieval deer park in Sevenoaks, north-west of Kent, Knole has had close links with kings, queens, and aristocrat families, as well as literary connections with Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf. The Sackville family still live in the house. Nevertheless, the historical rooms and the part of the surroundings are managed by the National Trust, and visitors are able to look round the principal rooms, e.g. Dining Rooms, Bedrooms, Drawing Rooms, Halls, Staircases, Galleries, and Ball Room with portraits of residents and celebrities, furniture, porcelain, and cosmetic items used by the James I and the Elizabeth I, and Dutch tapestries, and the statue of the lady whom Gainsborough used as a model, to name just a few. The highlight of the principal room is the King’s Bedroom which was newly designed for the ... read more

26 March - Friday Sunshine again. We stopped in East Grinsted for a McDonalds sausage and egg McMuffin because it was the convenient thing to do. We then walked to a bookstore to buy an AA road atlas. We could have just flipped a coin to decide which way to go as we just wanted to see the countryside. However, we headed in the general direction of Bodium Castle, a National Trust property that has a nice tea house and gift shop. Seeing at least one castle in England is mandatory, so we checked off that square. We then headed to Rye, one of our favorite towns, for a walk, some shopping, and delicious fish and chips. Then it was across the Romney Marshes, and through many quaint villages to our next Premier Inn hotel near ... read more

Hello!! So 9 months seem to have passed since my last blog entry and after many a joyful hour passed at a lovely private hospital in london I seemed to have reached the point where I can bear it no longer - a new backpack has been bought and I'm about to set off again! This time I have 7 and a half months and nothing other than a return ticket and a lonely planet guide to south america! After all plans are only made to be broken so this time I'm not bothering with any!! Anyway thought I'd try out a new blog site in the hope that everyone may be able to access it this time - keep me posted! and I'll keep you posted on all the craziest across the water. Till then, ... read more

17th July Went back to Sevenoaks today. Drove straight to Copper Beech. It's all done up now. Paddy's old gargage is now a room and theres a new double garage beside the end of the house. All the trees have been chopped back and the place is very different from 12 years ago. Had a wander through Knole Park - didn't bother taking the boys through Knole house. You can't run around nor kick a ball so we stuck to the park. Deer everywhere. So they all started to pretend to shoot. Gareth included. On the way home we came across a Berry Farm so we picked 4 pounds of raspberries. They now think I'm making jam. Blake was quiet proud of himself - he only ate 1. The others were less controlled. Beautiful raspberries, they're ... read more
