Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Billed with the headliners of Amy Winehouse, Gary Numan and the Human League, the Bestival on the Isle of Wight was a feast of music, fun, rain and mud! MUD - I don't think so! Phew, we missed all that lovely mud; as the family will recall - Lena does not do that! We did not attend the Bestival (far too muddy and cool for us), but we saw the remnants of the Bestival as we waited at Southampton ferry port and watched the bedraggled festival goers with muddy boots, legs, faces etc (you get the picture), trundle off the previous [View Full Entry]

I started talking to a girl - Emma - through emails, that I met through gapyear.com. She has similar plans to me and wants to travel Thailand, Oz, Fiji and New Zealand. She's wanting to go for longer than I am, and we'll have different timescales/things we want to do for some of the trip, but we started talking about flying out and doing the first bit, mainly Thailand, together. Hopefully we would've picked up confidence by Oz, so we could either travel some of it together if we have the same plans and are getting along, or go seperate ways [View Full Entry]

I've been looking at sites such as sta, travelnation and trailfinders, trying to get a rough idea on RTW ticket prices. After looking about I was hoping to probably pay between around £1,000 and £1,500 depending on the route. So I got in contact with travel nation and had a chat on the phone, they seemed really friendly and helpfull which was a good start. Although still undecided on a definate route and it may well change, I wanted a starting point so we discussed the places I'd like to see and the routes available, and so far came up with [View Full Entry]

Well this is my first ever blog, hello! I thought I would create it to log my plans of travelling and the travel itself, mainly as a reminder to me and to look back on my thoughts and plans, and for those who are interested to read about while I’m away, and sometimes - especially in the planning stages - to just waffle to myself when everyone is sick of hearing about it or not really interested in the first place! I have wanted to travel for a long time, and not knowing anyone who feels the same and not having [View Full Entry]

Yours Truly
Yours Truly
It's hard to look happier than this!
This is now becoming a bit ridiculous. Every time this summer that I have had an event planned, I wake up to lousy weather. And today, that was no mean feat. The alarm went off at 6.00, so I was at least hoping for the sun. But no, overcast and actually raining. Putting my faith in Poseidon, I donned a bathing suit, a skirt and a golf shirt for the better weather that I knew would eventually come along. Oh yeah, I put a fleece over it all. At 7.30, nine of us all met at the pub (stop it, it [View Full Entry]

Isle of White (hair) So I stayed with Nics for 4 or 5 days on the Isle, as I was missing her terribly and thought it would be relaxing Nics is based in Yarmouth, quite possibly as far from the touristy part as you can get. Very small and a good 20 minute drive to the nearest high street stores in Newport. Its quiet... too quiet. As soon as I got there I was lulled into a state of sleepiness and laziness that shocked even me. So relaxed was my immune system that I picked up a cold for the first [View Full Entry]

On the way to the needles
The Needles themselves

Wight is a middle english word meaning "creature especially human", literally translating the islands name as "Creature Island". Subsequant to Tolkein, wight also means "undead creature" meaning that many people assume that the island is named after ghosts and such, they are wrong, however there it has given rise to many ghost books and tours. There is also a special sub-set of people who think that the Isle of Wight is named after a colour. Those people cannot spell. Waking at quarter to six wasn't bad. Leaving the house at quarter to seven wasn't bad. Getting on the bus at quarter [View Full Entry]

Nelson, what a priviledge to see him
I am so lucky and feel very privledged because I have been within 100 metres of two of the greatest men of our time within 9 months. Last year in Auckland I sat in awe of the Dalai Lama and last week I went to Hyde Park to celebrate the 90th birthday of the Inspirational Nelson Mandala. Wow. To celebrate his bday and comemorate nearly 20 years since he was released they held a concert in London and Midiba was there and on stage. The lineup included Queen, Amy Winehouse, Razorlight, Eddy Grant, Annie Lennox, Joan Baez, Leona Lewis the sugarbabes [View Full Entry]

Isle of Wight
$240 a week

If anyone thinks the Isle of Wight is flat...think again !!! First time I came here and toured the island, it was by car, just stopping when beauty spots came along. This time it was for the 'Mountain Biking Festival Weekend'. Once base was established at the Ninham Campsite on the South East side of the island, it was bed early that night for what was in-store the next day. We woke to brilliant sunshine, which charged us with energy. I shant bore you with all the many riding tasks that are available (there are many), but Marcia and myself decided [View Full Entry]

Giles's home has internet now, making it possible for me to update Arkansas on my adventures on the Isle of Wight. But first, a prologue. The flight from Atlanta to Gatwick would have been excellent - little turbulence, great staff - but I had a horrible migraine, and my Zomig was in my checked luggage! So I was pretty miserable, even more so when I went through customs. The immigration officer was very upset that I did not have a confirmation of a return ticket or an exact address of where I would be staying on the Isle of Wight. She [View Full Entry]
