130719 - New Forest, Hampshire First time out in the Bongo for a test trip out to the New Forest in Hampshire. We had some fun and games trying to figure out what to pack, we're a bit rusty on this travelling thing, it's been 10 years since the days of Oz and New Zealand camper-vaning after all! In the spirit of past adventures and taking us all the way back, we bought a box of Australian Shiraz, only a bit fancier than goon! A short drive out of West Sussex via Petersfield and the South Downs and we’re in the New Forest heading for Burley. On our trip, we come across a very, very posh, one-percenter posh Polo Club in Cowdray, Midhurst. Not to feel too out of place, we park the Bongo next to ... read more

Jean and I were up early to get packed for our 8:30am departure with Christine. We drove for a few hours until we got to the New Forest, a national park where wild horses roam around. We saw several standing in the middle of the road holding up traffic and standing on the front nature strips of people living in the villages around the New Forest. Our first stop was Buckler’s Hard, a historic maritime village west of Southampton. Hard was used to identify a hard surface on the shore, perfect for pulling boats up on. This was where several of Admiral Nelson’s ships were built and repaired at the end of the 1700s/early 1800s. We also went on a 40 minute cruise around the Beaulieu River estuary, which is privately owned and a breeding ground ... read more

As August turns into September and the children return to School it is time for the people with no responsibility for these children, my wife and I included, to load up the car and head off to somewhere nice for that much needed break. This year we had the added bonus that as if by magic the weeks of what seemed like endless rain were replaced by a cloudless blue sky. The New Forest and Lymington were our destination, I actually owed my wife a New Forest trip as I had rather mucked up a previous attempt by not knowing exactly where the New Forest is. If you head out of Southampton you need to head south…lesson learned! Travelling from Bristol it is a straight forward route, take the A36 and head towards Salisbury. I must ... read more

I bought a Raleigh Royal, which is a steel touring bike with 700c wheels, and cycled to the New Forest and back, following the national cycle route 2. The cycle route actually starts in Dover, so I joined it as it cuts across the Marsh, just down the road from Aldington. The route starts on tarmac, but there are quite a few places where the tarmac has worn away or never had any in the first place. Day one would take me through Lydd, Camber and Rye to get to Winchelsea, mostly following the coastline, Until Pevansey, where it would head in land to get to Alfriston. Most of this route was flat, but at Winchelsea there’s an almighty hill to get over to Hastings. I tried my best, but knowing I had another two days ... read more

I suppose I had better confess... though my journey started in the New forest I didn't actually cycle from there. A couple of days earlier the family had discussed going to Drusillas animal park, at Alfriston. I decided that I wanted to do this too, so rather than set off on the Thursday, we bundled all my stuff in to the truck, ready for Friday. Again to be honest, this did mean I missed out all the problem points of Southampton and Chichester, though like everything, once you know about it, its not such a big problem, so I probably would have enjoy the cycle back through these places. Another change of plan was a lunch meet, midday Friday, with Louis in Shoreham, as Route 2 goes right passed his flat in shoreham-by-sea. On the first ... read more

Three weeks out before we take the ferry from Dover to Calais and start our European adventure, Chris and I had our first night in the camper van. It was a success! We spent the evening of Saturday 2 March here - http://www.campingintheforest.co.uk/england/new-forest/setthorns-campsite - a sprawling, wooded campsite in the New Forest. We camped at a site with an electric hook-up so we could try the gas cookers, grill and oven. Everything worked.... However, a hiccup before we had even set out was that (after filling the huge water tank) we discovered the water pump wasn't working. This meant that we had water on board but wouldn't be able to use the taps in the kitchen and bathroom sinks. Only slightly deterred we decided to take a large jerry can of water with us and sort ... read more

We arrived at our New Forest location after driving across to the Salisbury region via North Cornwall, North Devon, Exmoor and a region called the Quantock Hills. Our first stop was a spur of the moment decision. We were driving past a place called Westward Ho! (complete with exclamation mark) and decided we had to visit just to see what it was like. Well it was a lot bigger than I expected, based by the dot on the map. It was a seaside town with a relatively long strip of sandy beach, a couple of large hotels facing the beach, fun parlours and an "adult games" establishment. We had a walk down to the beach to witness the school kids shivering their way back from their surfing lesson, had morning tea in a cafe and determined ... read more

17 Sep Sat Perth, Hong Kong, Heathrow, New Forest Our trip to London was relatively uneventful. Leaving at 10:15pm meant it was fairly easy to sleep or at least nod off while watching movies. We had a very short stop over in Hong Kong, not even enough time to do a spot of shopping. As it turned out, because it was 6:30am, the airport shops weren’t even open. The transit ticket checkers at Hong Kong didn’t like our on line check in printed boarding passes, so after waiting in a long queue, we had to queue again, and wait for a carded boarding pass to be printed with the exact same information and bar codes! We arrived in London slightly early but this was all undone as David’s bag didn’t arrive at the same time as ... read more
