Another day, another Richmond. Two weeks after my appearance at the North Yorkshire founding father, we find ourselves in Richmond on Thames. I could now be on a mission to visit all 57 of the places of that name, but this trip is pure coincidence. There is no football this weekend. The Other Half decided on a trip to London and who was I to complain. Summer is officially here. In many senses with the recent terrorist attacks, it is unfortunate timing. I was also offered a Scotland v England ticket the other day. Alas, that is at Hampden later today so I was forced to decline. Richmond on Thames rose to prominence in Tudor times. Henry VII built a palace here, although nothing of that now remains. The original burned down and the replacement didn’t ... read more

Wczoraj pojechałam z Glorią Michalinka i Krzysiem do parku, zwanego Plantacja Izabeli, który mieści się w w Richmond Parku. To taki park w parku. Zasadził dęby, buki i słodkie kasztany. On też nazwał ten park Isabella Plantation. Obecny wygląd parku, stawów, strumieni i polan w dużej mierze ... read more

We decided to do the walk on the riverside from Richmond to Kew on Monday, 5th May. Richmond station was adjacent to the High Street lined with exclusive clothes shops, restaurants, cafes. The access lane for the riverside walk was closed due to the building work, but Mark soon found the alternative way. We found the red-brick and terracotta building, e.g. Richmond Theatre, Richmond Green, entrance arch of the old Tudor Palace adored with the arms of Henry VII, etc., on the way to the riverside. We followed on the towpath flanked by the Old Deer Park, which used to be the territory of Richmond Palace and Thames River. Quite a few walkers, joggers, and cyclists were going through on the sunny Bank holiday. The towpath led us to the viewpoint for Isleworth Ait where herons ... read more

Gate nahodili asi 45.min pred odletom. Na colnici bez problemov i ked si colnik dost prehliadal moju obcanku ani nevim preco som mu nedal pas, bolo by to asi o 25 sekund rychlejsie. Nasledovala potom uz nicim nerusena cesta ku gate, prakticky som isiel s davom, vsetci co isli ... read more

Remember, Remember the 5th of November – a rhyme taught to us at junior school to remind us of Guy Fawkes failed attempt at blowing up parliament. November is one of those months that is lighted up only by the bonfires and the fireworks. It is a month of hoar frosts, ice but most times heavy dank mists that cling to the air like the smoke from a funeral pyre. The word dank first raised its head when I read Enid Blytons the Island of Adventure in 1963 and was convinced that the printers had mistaken the word damp and confused it and jumbled it up with dark. Sunday was such a day. Suzy was covered in a thick layer of frost and ice which had to be cleared off before we could set off for London. ... read more

Geo: 54.4052, -1.73662 Richmond Park is an oasis of tranquillity and all things natural with beautiful grassland, incredible woods, hills and views of the valley of the Thames. Richmond lies 15 miles southwest of central London, we caught bus no 65 which stops at Petersham Gate which is up the hill, but if you catch bus 371 from Richmond station it goes to both Petersham Gate and Richmond Gate, We walked past the Pembroke Lodge, a Georgian mansion with garden settings with spectacular views to the viewing point at King Henry's Mound to see London skyline edging down. We then took a walk through the Richmond Park which is vast and we had our picnic here; we passed many cyclists and joggers along the way. We were blessed with good weather and we also walked to the ... read more

On Wednesday I went to a play called "Tell Them That I am Young and Beautiful" in the Arcola Theatre. This place was really interesting to find and was in a part of London that I was not familiar with at all but was an adventure nevertheless. The theatre has two stages and the one that I was in is supposedly much bigger than the other. The audience is seated on wooden benches that have padded seating in an L-shape around the wood floored stage and the benches only go about four rows up. The actors are so close to you and there aren't many props or much stage decoration to help with the setting. This play had several different stories that were about greed, hospitality, sacrifice, love, knowledge, truth, and freedom. The stories were constantly ... read more

Just arrived yesterday, 29th August to Richmond University here in Greater London. First blog since being here and I want to keep people posted with what I'm up to over here. Flight from Boston to London Heathrow Airport was a little over 6 hours - not too bad. After getting my baggage and checking thru customs and immigration, I caught the Tube to take to Richmond. I have to laugh, I'm pretty savvy when it comes to subways but this was like a scavenger hunt for me! From Heathrow, I took the Tube to Actons Square where I had to pick up the District Line. This line is less frequent at this stop so I had to wait a while. Once it arrived, I took it to Turnham Green, where you have to pick up another ... read more

Originally built in 1514, Hampton Court is one of the last remaining buildings used by english king Henry VIII. I visited the court back in August last year, and absaloutly loved it. The difference i felt with this palace in comparison to other Palaces/Courts in London or surronding area was that it was much more visitor friendly. In most places I visited on my trip things such as photography was banned inside buildings and the places were very strict and structered, however Hampton Court seemed to take a different suit. They encouraged you to take photos, to get up close and personal with paintings and the rooms and the also put on various plays during the day to help take you back into the vibrant court of Henry VIII. All this promoted such a fun atmosphere. ... read more

As a civil servant, Mark has been given the privilege day (extra day off) on a day after the 2nd May Bank Holiday. We decided to explore Richmond Park on 31 May. After getting off at Richmond, we walked on the High Street, Hill Street, and walked uphill on Hill Rise. Then, we entered the footpath or the balcony overlooking Terrace Gardens, Parklands and the Thames River. We found Ham House (National Trust) and Marble Hill House (English Heritage) on both banks of the river as well. The weather was variable when we arrived in Richmond. It drizzled and showered a bit from time to time. Following the footpath along Richmond Hill, it led us to the Richmond Gate, which was famously designed by Capability Brown, and the entrance of Richmond Park. Like Hyde Park and ... read more
