On Wednesday I went to a play called "Tell Them That I am Young and Beautiful" in the Arcola Theatre. This place was really interesting to find and was in a part of London that I was not familiar with at all but was an adventure nevertheless. The theatre has two stages and the one that I was in is supposedly much bigger than the other. The audience is seated on wooden benches that have padded seating in an L-shape around the wood floored stage and the benches only go about four rows up. The actors are so close to you and there aren't many props or much stage decoration to help with the setting. This play had several different stories that were about greed, hospitality, sacrifice, love, knowledge, truth, and freedom. The stories were constantly ... read more

Just arrived yesterday, 29th August to Richmond University here in Greater London. First blog since being here and I want to keep people posted with what I'm up to over here. Flight from Boston to London Heathrow Airport was a little over 6 hours - not too bad. After getting my baggage and checking thru customs and immigration, I caught the Tube to take to Richmond. I have to laugh, I'm pretty savvy when it comes to subways but this was like a scavenger hunt for me! From Heathrow, I took the Tube to Actons Square where I had to pick up the District Line. This line is less frequent at this stop so I had to wait a while. Once it arrived, I took it to Turnham Green, where you have to pick up another ... read more

Originally built in 1514, Hampton Court is one of the last remaining buildings used by english king Henry VIII. I visited the court back in August last year, and absaloutly loved it. The difference i felt with this palace in comparison to other Palaces/Courts in London or surronding area was that it was much more visitor friendly. In most places I visited on my trip things such as photography was banned inside buildings and the places were very strict and structered, however Hampton Court seemed to take a different suit. They encouraged you to take photos, to get up close and personal with paintings and the rooms and the also put on various plays during the day to help take you back into the vibrant court of Henry VIII. All this promoted such a fun atmosphere. ... read more

As a civil servant, Mark has been given the privilege day (extra day off) on a day after the 2nd May Bank Holiday. We decided to explore Richmond Park on 31 May. After getting off at Richmond, we walked on the High Street, Hill Street, and walked uphill on Hill Rise. Then, we entered the footpath or the balcony overlooking Terrace Gardens, Parklands and the Thames River. We found Ham House (National Trust) and Marble Hill House (English Heritage) on both banks of the river as well. The weather was variable when we arrived in Richmond. It drizzled and showered a bit from time to time. Following the footpath along Richmond Hill, it led us to the Richmond Gate, which was famously designed by Capability Brown, and the entrance of Richmond Park. Like Hyde Park and ... read more

One thing I have never done in England is walk the Thames Path, which runs from its source in the Cotwolds, through Oxfordshire, into London and past Greenwich to the Thames Barrier. There are lots of signs to keep you on the path as it sometimes winds away from the river. There are also lots of cozy pubs along the way. I didn't have time to walk the whole thing (it's 180 miles) so yesterday I focused on the area around Southwark, which took me past the London Eye, the Tate Modern and the Houses of Parliament. Today I decided to escape the throngs of tourists in the city center and walk the area between Kew and Richmond. This is quite a lovely area of the Thames, despite still being in the city. Kew is famous ... read more

Officially Happy Easter to everyone back home! Here's hoping that everyone had a wonderful day! Across the waters in London, Easter was a good day. It started out with the Cadbury egg waking up with kids. It appears that the Easter Bunny found its way to Kristen and Ryan... even way over here in London. I tried to convince the Bunny to hide the eggs in the hotel room, but it was hard to gauge what was "clean" and what wasn't. Nevertheless, Kristen and Ryan each got a Cadbury Caramel Egg to start of their Easter morning. We had breakfast downstairs in our hotel. They had a continental breakfast buffet for 14 pounds and if you wanted to add eggs, you needed to add an additional 4 pounds. Very expensive, but we weren't sure what restaurants ... read more

Wednesday 15th December 2010 Starting to think about what to pack and what to pack it in. Thoughts for the day: 1 Thinking about managing your lives from 12,000 miles away can give you a real headache 2 Whoever said "Lay out your packing and disregard half of it" was being wildly optimistic! 3 Where did I put that Arran knit sweater...... read more

Ham House and garden is an unusual complete survival of the 17th century that impressed in its day and continues to do so today. The house was built in 1610, and resided in by the aristocratic family, such as William Murray, Lord and Lady Lauderdale, 5th-9th Earl of Dysart between the 17th century and the 1940s. The wealthy Lauderdale family employed the famous architects such as William Bruce or William Samuel, and they designed sumptuous interior and furniture with intricate decorations and carvings in the Reception, Drawing Room, Staircase, Dining Room, and Gallery, in line with Lord Lauderdale’s status, i.e. a member of minister for the Charles 2nd. These architects also designed rare and precious tapestries and furniture for the house, and they are displayed in the showrooms today. Those 17th century artwork and furniture convey ... read more
