The idea
I recall the moment when, walking through Chile's "Torres del Paine" national park, Chloe turns to me and says - "Why don't we take the whole year off rather than just 6 months? Then we can see Africa sooner rather than later". I laughed. As if 6 months of no income and living out a rucksack wasn't enough.
Later, somebody (I don't recall who) said that travelling in the Middle East was "amazing" and "should not be missed". I started laughing again. The Middle East!! No bl**dy way! Terrorism is rife there and, anyway, will they even let us in?
The plan
After surprisingly little thought and deliberation I extended my career break and Chloe held off sending out her CV - we WOULD travel through the Middle East then Africa then on to Australia or the UK to start work in the new year! (Note: this is now confirmed as the UK).
The plan then, vague as it is, can be summarised as follows....
Month 1: Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Jordan, Egypt
Month 2-3: Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland & Lesotho
Month 3-4: Perth (Oz), Cairns (Oz), Hong Kong
We've checked the foriegn office website and the route we are taking is "safe" for the most part. And if we don't write for a while is far more likely to be due to bad internet connections and our packed itinerary than anything else.
The execution
Well, we head off tomorrow and fully equipped with sleeping bags, suncream and a rather fetching headscarf (Chloe). A gentle start in the city of Istanbul.
You can read all about our trials and tribulations right here - we hope you enjoy it and we look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.

Send Private MessageThat is totally awesome guys... well done!!! We are back home for two months now and actually would love to go again too. And to be honest I already made a worldtrip part two too haha..looks like your plan.
That would have to be Middle-East (first overland to Istanbul en after that down south) ..after that to Africa (still have to work on the exact route there) and after that middle-America and working our way up north up to Canada. If there still is time left: over to Scandinavia and the down to Holland again....
Okay, i still need to convince Christina, but now that you're going..might help!
Looking forward to the stories and pictures!!

... are you still going to make Chloe walk at least 2m behind you?
I did laugh when you announced that. Take care you two and have a lovely time in Istanbul. Namibia is my next destination after the South American adventure. XX
Nice one lovebirds! Looking forward to hearing all about your next exploits! Enjoy! Boys are missing their regular supply of pancakes and chocolate sauce!!! Although very pleased with the additions to their treat box! LOL Jo x
well after a crackin' half marathon and monaco shopping you must be in need of more holidaying! We did love seeing you. Please dont make the blog too gushing as we all struggle thro the rain & 'credit crunch'. Hope you take the town tae town and travel like yous 'ave invented it man!

Your plan sounds amazing - it only seems like a few weeks ago when I remember one of your first blogs from South America. Jordan is meant to have the most polite people in the world. Never heard of Lesotho - think the tour guide was pulling your leg there and for the record I had assumed you weren't going to go to Perth (Scotland) as part of your career break! I reckon you could go for some pretty exotic local delicacies in the places you are visiting. I'd be interested to find out which of you have tried the worst/most exciting one - reckon you could go far daring each other. Unfortuneate as the situation is in Zimbabwe is - do try to get a hold of some local currency. Otherwise enjoy, enjoy and enjoy!! Sorry to have missed you when you were last in the UK. Can't wait to see you in the New Year.
